Shirakawa-go

Shirakawa-go is a mountain village in a remote valley of Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, famous for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses, whose steep thatched roofs are built to shed heavy snow. The village of Ogimachi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and villagers still re-thatch the roofs together.

The Shiroyama viewpoint spreads the whole settlement below, the classic photograph in every season, whether snow-buried in February or deep green in July. Several farmhouses open as museums of mountain life, showing silkworm attics and open-hearth floors, and the Wada House preserves the largest of them in living detail.

A handful of farmhouses take overnight guests, and sleeping under a thatched roof after the day-trippers leave changes the experience entirely. Winter buries the village photogenically; the famous illumination evenings sell out far ahead, so plan early. Buses connect Shirakawa-go with Takayama and Kanazawa year-round.
