Visiting the Chiran Samurai Residences was an interesting experience that gives you a glimpse into how samurai used to live. Given their social status, these houses were likely considered absolute luxury back in the day. However, they are quite a bit smaller than I originally expected. The garden views are just okay and on the smaller side, but they look genuinely nice right now with a touch of ume (plum) blossoms. Honestly, without the flowers, the gardens might feel a bit plain. One important thing to note: local people still live in this village! Some houses are open to tourists, while others are strictly private residences, so you need to pay close attention to the signs. The weirdest (yet most charming) part of the visit is the ticketing. We bought our tickets (530 yen per person) at the booth, but nobody ever checked them inside, despite multiple signs reminding visitors of the fee. It completely relies on the honor system! The carpark and the public restrooms outside are incredibly clean and well-maintained, which I really appreciated. Therefore, please do the right thing and buy the ticket to support the local community and help them maintain this beautiful historic place!

It's a small village that has been kept as intact as possible. You're able to go and view some houses and see the streets and wander through them. Be warned if you go anywhere summer up until September and you come from a cold country- it's suuuuuuper hot

Beautiful and peaceful gardens. We loved visiting these gardens and learning more about Japanese culture. A lovely area to go and worth the drive from Kagoshima. We went as a family and everyone from my children to my father enjoyed our time here.

Inside the samurai residence you can visit seven houses, but you can enter to the gardens only. Gardens are so beautiful with flowers. You can take a look from outside to inside of the houses in few places. There are coffee shops and restaurants too. Parking is free of charge.

Lovely stroll through the residences. You can go into some courtyards but you can’t go inside any houses.
