Cosmo Planetarium Shibuya

Last updated Apr 2, 2026

Cosmo Planetarium Shibuya opened in 2001 as part of the Shibuya Cultural Center Owada in Tokyo's bustling Shibuya district. The facility replaced an older planetarium and represents Japan's commitment to making astronomy education accessible in urban environments. Located on the 12th floor of the cultural center, it serves as both an educational facility and entertainment venue for visitors of all ages.

The planetarium features a 17-meter diameter dome equipped with advanced digital projection systems that display highly detailed star fields and astronomical phenomena. The facility uses Konica Minolta planetarium technology to create immersive experiences showcasing the night sky, solar system exploration, and cosmic events. Programs include live narration by professional staff who explain celestial movements and astronomical concepts in both Japanese and occasionally English during special international shows.

Regular programming includes seasonal star-gazing guides that highlight constellations visible from Tokyo throughout the year, making each visit relevant to current astronomical conditions. Spring programs often focus on cherry blossom season stargazing, while winter shows emphasize the clear skies and bright constellations of colder months. Summer programming frequently includes special exhibits about space exploration and the Milky Way galaxy. The planetarium also hosts special events during astronomical phenomena such as meteor showers, eclipses, and planetary alignments.

Cosmo Planetarium Shibuya is located within 5 minutes walking distance from JR Shibuya Station, accessible via the Hachiko Exit. The venue operates Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with multiple show times throughout the day. Adult admission costs ¥600, while children and seniors pay ¥300. Reserved seating is recommended, particularly for weekend shows and special programs. The cultural center also houses a library and other facilities, making it possible to combine planetarium visits with other cultural activities in the same building.

Traveler reviews

It's a wonderful experience if you've never tried visiting a planetarium before. Will need to buy a ticket ahead in time in order to get the show you'd like to watch. They got shows for kids to adults.

Good for curing my insomnia😴. There’s so many interesting objects to view in the cosmos but this tour showed nothing beyond night sky constellations, so boring! The driver talked too long about the same things. With such an amazing facility they could have made the presentation much more interesting. I was disappointed. This tour failed to inspire the amazement of astronomy and our cosmos.

Quite a small planetarium, but the visuals are very nice. They have different themes for each of the sky shows throughout the day, and each one lasts around 45 minutes. You wouldn’t believe that there’s something like this is in the middle of shibuya, and for the price it’s definitely worth visiting. I feel like people of any age can enjoy this as well.

Adults 600 yen, children 300 yen, plus preschoolers on an adult's lap are free. Really cheap! The planetarium system is so great! The children's program features Hachiko, the loyal dog, and is fun for kids! It was so much fun we ended up watching the program twice!
