The Futako Tamagawa RISE Skate Garden is a seasonal outdoor ice skating rink located within the modern Futako Tamagawa Rise shopping and entertainment complex in Tokyo's upscale Setagaya ward. First established in 2012, this winter attraction has become a beloved annual tradition, transforming the area into a magical winter destination along the scenic banks of the Tama River in southwest Tokyo.

The facility features a 390 square meter ice skating rink, making it a substantial outdoor skating venue in the heart of the city. The rink operates as a full-scale ice skating facility during Tokyo's winter months, typically running from late November through early March. With a theme of "blooming lights," the venue creates an enchanting atmosphere where visitors can glide across the ice surrounded by illuminated surroundings.

The Skate Garden offers experiences for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced skaters. Skating lessons can be booked on the day for beginners or novices, subject to availability, while support sleds are available for rental to help younger skaters. The atmosphere transforms throughout the day, offering a lively daytime experience that shifts to a more magical, illuminated setting in the evening hours when the lighting system creates an enchanting winter wonderland.

Located in the affluent "Nikotama" district, the skate garden sits within a larger complex that embodies the concept of harmony with nature through "water, greenery, and light". The surrounding Futako-Tamagawa area is an upscale residential and shopping neighborhood easily accessible within 20 minutes from Shibuya. The venue provides direct access to numerous shops, restaurants, and entertainment facilities within the Rise complex, making it an ideal destination for a full day of winter activities.

Admission fees are ¥1,400 for adults, ¥1,200 for students over 13, and ¥1,000 for elementary school students and younger. The facility is conveniently located just three minutes' walk from Futako-Tamagawa Station, which is served by both the Tokyu Denentoshi Line and Oimachi Line, providing direct connections to major Tokyo districts including Shibuya, Shinjuku, and central Tokyo.

Traveler reviews

I visited on the 30th of December. I wasn't there to skate, but just to check it out as my friend's grandson wanted to use the rink. The rink was packed with children, about elementary school age. I took this photo after they all left, presumably to be changing rooms. The next group of parents and children were heading out, causing a traffic jam in front of the reception area. There were autographs of Olympic athletes on display on the wall in front of the wreath and helmet area.

This leisure rink appears only in winter between the buildings of Futako Tamagawa Rise. It is relatively empty during the day on weekdays, making it an easy rink for adult figure skaters to practice on their own or for beginners. Experienced staff members also offer one-point lessons! Even if you show up suddenly, there are rental shoes available so you can enjoy skating casually. However, you cannot enter the rink without gloves, so please bring your own or purchase them at the rental shoe store. Beginners can also rent helmets and protectors. Lockers are also available for storing valuables and other personal belongings.

It's located at Futako Tamagawa Rise and is only open in winter. The skating rink is made of a special resin so you won't get wet even if you fall. There are skating lessons taught by famous skaters.

I was able to have a different experience with my child. He even held my hand 😁. I might consider taking a trial class if I get the chance.

The assistive devices are charged at 500 yen for 20 minutes, but they are collected earlier than the allotted time. When renting, I was told that the rental period starts at 9:00 and ends at 25 minutes. The person in charge was a young man who looked like a part-time worker. I paid a high total fee, and it left me with a bad experience. The management needs to properly train this staff member. The system itself is good, offering lessons and assistive device rentals. I will not be going back.
