Fukuroda Falls, Daigo

4.4 (472)Natural FeatureEstablishment

Fukuroda Falls is one of Japan's most celebrated waterfalls, located in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. The falls cascade down a 120-meter height in four distinct stages, which is reflected in its name—"Fukuroda" derives from the phrase "yodo," meaning four degrees, referring to how the water drops four times before reaching the basin below. The falls span approximately 73 meters in width during peak flow, creating an impressive curtain of water against the surrounding rock face.

The waterfall has been admired since ancient times and is counted among Japan's three most famous waterfalls, alongside Nachi Falls in Wakayama and Kegon Falls in Nikko. The site gained particular prominence during the Edo period when the renowned Confucian scholar Tokugawa Mitsukuni visited and praised its beauty. Historical records suggest that the falls were considered a sacred site for mountain ascetics and Buddhist practitioners who used the area for spiritual training and meditation.

Visitors can experience the falls from multiple viewing platforms that offer different perspectives throughout the year. The main observation deck provides a frontal view at approximately the same height as the second tier of the falls, while an elevator carved into the mountainside descends 276 meters to a tunnel that leads to additional viewing platforms closer to the base. The falls present dramatically different appearances across seasons—surrounded by fresh greenery in spring and summer, framed by autumn foliage in November, and partially frozen into spectacular ice formations during the coldest winter months of January and February.

Access to Fukuroda Falls requires taking the JR Joban Line from Tokyo to Mito Station, then transferring to the JR Suigun Line to Fukuroda Station, with the total journey taking approximately two and a half hours. From Fukuroda Station, a local bus operates to the falls, requiring about 10 minutes travel time, though buses run infrequently and schedules should be checked in advance. The site charges an admission fee of ¥300 for adults to access the observation tunnel and elevator system.

There are 2 observatory deck and one suspension bridge. The ticket is only 300 yen. The entry tunnel is very good and has colorful lighting. On your way to the tunnel, there are 2 photospots. You can stop and have picture. There is a swing place and a place with flower. Then you see the 1st observatory deck. Then went to elevator and ride for 2nd deck. The fall itself is so beautiful. We recommend to choose the evening time so that you can enjoy both night and day views. The timing is really short. The fall open at morning but illumination starts from 1700-1900. So be careful. We miss the time for 1st time 😂. Its so cold out there.

The waterfall is hidden away in the remote hills of Daigo town in northwestern Ibaraki Prefecture. The 120-meter-tall cascading falls are one of the three most beautiful in Japan. After the ticket gate, you walk through a 276-meter-long pedestrian tunnel leading to a multi-level observation platform. The lower platform provides an up-close view of the cascade just meters away from its base, while the upper platform, accessible via an elevator, provides panoramic views of the falls' four tiers from about 50 meters above the ground. On the way out, you have the option to backtrack the way you came in or to use a secondary tunnel exit which leads to a short pedestrian suspension bridge with a side-on perspective of the waterfall near its base. Follow the trail for a nice nature hike as well.
