Gandate Gorge

Gandate Gorge is located in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture, at the confluence of the Osaka River and Nigori River. The gorge formed approximately 54,000 years ago when lava from Mount Ontake's eruption flowed through the valley and cooled. This lava flow extends upstream for around 16 kilometers, making it the longest continuous lava flow visible in Japan today. The site has been designated a Natural Monument of Gifu Prefecture.

The centerpiece is the Gandate Rock Wall, measuring 72 meters high and 120 meters wide. The rock face displays a distinctive geological feature known as columnar jointing, which creates the appearance of numerous vertical columns standing side by side. This phenomenon occurred as the volcanic lava cooled and solidified, causing the rock to separate into column-like formations that create a striking visual pattern across the cliff face.

Visitors can explore a well-maintained walkway approximately 600 meters long that takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete one way. The path leads to Mitsudaki Falls, a three-tiered waterfall accessible from Gandate Park. The gorge is particularly renowned for its autumn foliage, though each season offers distinct natural beauty from spring greenery to winter snow scenes. Gandate Park serves as the base for exploration, equipped with parking facilities, restrooms, and a shop.

The gorge is accessible from Gero Station via Nohi Bus, with the journey taking approximately 25 minutes to 1 hour depending on the service. By car, the drive from Gero Station takes about 35 minutes. A free shuttle bus operates on weekends during peak seasons, connecting JR Hida-Osaka Station with Gandate Park. An environmental maintenance cooperation fee of ¥300 per person is requested, with free admission for children under junior high school age.
