What other travelers are saying about Gunma Museum of Natural History
This is a great museum to learn about dinosaurs and animal history. You can see various dinosaurs bones and taxidermy of many animals. You can stay for hours in this museum. Dinosaurs were bigger than I imagined. I felt sorry for animals that went extinct because of humans. It’s a good place to teach kids about the importance of biodiversity.
All information at each exhibit is in Japanese, except the name of the exhibit which is also written in English. The exhibits are very visual so you can get by without reading Japanese. However, the information provided is very interesting and educational. Same with the interactive media - Japanese only. I can read Japanese so I didn't ask, but it maybe worth asking at the reception if they have an English brochure.
Parking is a disaster on a busy day. No parking attendents directing the flow. Elevator is concealed - you have to ask to be brought to it from the lower floor. Its visible and accessible from the upper floor.
Good value for money. Kids are free in. The kids enjoyed it and learned a lot. Good rainy day location. It gets excellent reviews, but we've been to many museums in Japan and I found it to be just average.
You can learn the evaluation of the humans and some other animal’s evolution. You have so many things to know about the dinosaurs too. It’s very exciting to see the fossils too.
Wonderful place to visit day ling tour with kids & family. It was so amazing more than my expectations!
There’s a nice park with lots of of rides just in front of the Museum!
Personal photography is permitted in most exhibition areas, though flash photography may be restricted to protect specimens. Commercial photography and video recording require advance permission. Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed.
The museum provides English pamphlets and basic English signage. Audio guides in English are available for rent at the information desk. Most detailed exhibition descriptions are in Japanese.
The museum is located near the Tomioka Silk Mill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's just 10 minutes away by car. This makes for an excellent combined day trip exploring both natural history and industrial heritage. The area also offers access to Mount Myogi for hiking and the Gunma Safari Park, allowing visitors to experience the region's natural landscapes alongside the museum's geological and paleontological exhibits.
The museum offers barrier-free access with elevators and ramps throughout. Nursing rooms and diaper-changing facilities are available. Strollers can be used in exhibition areas, and special children's workshops are offered during school holidays and weekends.
