Haikara Yokocho, Katsushika

Haikara Yokocho, established in 2004, is a retro-themed attraction located in the historic Shibamata district of Tokyo's Katsushika ward. The name translates to "Stylish Alley," combining "Haikara," a Japanese term meaning fashionable or stylish, with "Yokocho," meaning alley. Originally a traditional "dagashi" (retro sweets) shop, it was transformed into its current form by its owner who specializes in children's candy and toys.

The attraction serves as a nostalgic portal to Japan's 1950s-1960s downtown culture, preserving the atmosphere of traditional Japanese confectionery and toy shops. It functions as both a retail space featuring traditional Japanese candies, sweets, snacks, toys, and souvenirs, as well as a collection of vintage photographs and postcards of famous Japanese celebrities including movie stars and singers. The venue has particular significance as part of Shibamata's cultural landscape, an area famous for its connection to the beloved "Tora-san" film series.

Visitors can explore the ground floor which offers free access to extensive displays of traditional dagashi confectionery, vintage toys, and nostalgic memorabilia. The experience includes browsing wall-to-wall displays of retro classics and recent favorites, many priced at just a few yen, along with a game corner filled with vintage arcade games and retro originals. The second floor houses the Shibamata Toy Museum, accessible for 200 yen for adults and accompanied children age 1 and up.

The attraction is conveniently located just 1 minute from Shibamata Station on the Keisei Kanamachi Line or 12 minutes from Shin-Shibamata Station on the Hokuso Line. From central Tokyo locations like Shibuya Station, the journey takes approximately one hour by subway. Haikara Yokocho operates daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with ground floor admission free and second floor museum access costing 200 yen.
