The Jian Zhen Memorial Hall in Minamisatsuma, Kagoshima Prefecture, commemorates one of the most significant figures in Japanese Buddhist history. Jian Zhen (also known as Ganjin in Japanese) was a Tang Dynasty high priest and founder of Toshodaiji Temple in Nara who played a crucial role in establishing formal Buddhist ordination practices in Japan during the 8th century. The memorial museum was built in 1992 to honor Jian zhen's great achievements.

In the 8th century, Japanese priests asked Ganjin to travel to Japan to establish a proper ordainment system. The journey from China proved extraordinarily perilous. It was after ten years and on his sixth attempt that Ganjin finally made it to Japan in 753. During these arduous voyages, he lost both eyes after five failed attempts and repeated difficulties. Despite his blindness, in 753 he finally succeeded in landing in Bonotsu, Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima. Beyond introducing Buddhist precepts, he introduced medicinal knowledge to Japan and established institutions to help the poor and orphans.

Inside, visitors can view replicas of Ganjin's seated statue and explore detailed exhibits about his perilous sea crossings and contributions to Japanese Buddhism. The museum features a film of about fifteen minutes on Ganjin's life shown on large screens. The facility has been upgraded with wheelchair accessibility, spacious parking, and multilingual maps for international visitors.

Admission is 200 yen for adults and 100 yen for elementary and junior high school students. The museum is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a public holiday). Transportation requires approximately 70 minutes by car from Ibusuki Skyline Taniyama Interchange. Parking is available on-site. Minamisatsuma itself sits about one hour by car or bus from Kagoshima city, which can be reached via a two-hour flight from Tokyo or a 50-minute Shinkansen ride from Fukuoka.

The 210 yen admission fee was definitely worth it. The Kawazu cherry blossoms are also beautiful in February. Even if this place alone isn't enough, if you also visit the 007 Memorial, Kasasa Museum, and Kasasa, the home of the master brewer, you'll be extremely satisfied.

📅November 2025 It's been about 10 years since my last visit. The building has been renovated. Photography is prohibited in the exhibit booths. I was deeply moved by learning more about Ganjin's accomplishments. 🍀 The roads are narrow.

It's a place I've wanted to visit for a long time, but I was on a bicycle and didn't have the time, so I had to give up even though I was close by. I'm so glad I finally made it! The exhibits and materials are average in terms of quality, but apparently, Ganjin landed right around this museum. Photography is mostly prohibited inside the museum.
