I suddenly got a stomachache while driving on National Route 226.
There were no shops or public restrooms nearby, and the mountain road was full of steep ups and downs and many curves. A few kilometers ahead, I saw a sign for the Ganjin Memorial Museum...
I drove on with a prayerful heart.
There was a parking lot that could fit several cars, and at the entrance was a bronze statue of Ganjin with a peaceful expression.
I climbed the stairs and found a restroom with outside access.
It was immaculately clean.
I somehow managed to escape that hopeless mountain road unscathed.
If Ganjin had never come to this place, this memorial museum would not exist, and for that moment, I was truly grateful to him.
The 210 yen admission fee was definitely worth it. The Kawazu cherry blossoms are also beautiful in February. Even if this place alone isn't enough, if you also visit the 007 Memorial, Kasasa Museum, and Kasasa, the home of the master brewer, you'll be extremely satisfied.
📅November 2025
It's been about 10 years since my last visit.
The building has been renovated.
Photography is prohibited in the exhibit booths.
I was deeply moved by learning more about Ganjin's accomplishments. 🍀
The roads are narrow.
The museum features replicas of Ganjin's seated statue and detailed exhibits documenting his perilous sea voyages and extraordinary life. Visitors can watch a 15-minute film on large screens that chronicles his journey and achievements. The exhibits explain how he spent a decade in Japan introducing not only Buddhism but also Tang Dynasty arts, medicine, and architecture, despite being blind.
Admission to the Jian Zhen Memorial Hall costs 200 yen for adults and 100 yen for elementary and junior high school students. The museum is closed on Mondays, or the following day if Monday falls on a public holiday.
Yes, the facility has been upgraded with wheelchair accessibility features, including a wheelchair ramp. The museum also offers spacious parking and provides multilingual maps for international visitors, making it welcoming for diverse audiences.
It takes approximately 70 minutes by car from Ibusuki Skyline Taniyama Interchange. Minamisatsuma itself is about one hour by car or bus from Kagoshima city, which can be reached via a two-hour flight from Tokyo or a 50-minute Shinkansen ride from Fukuoka. On-site parking is available for visitors driving to the location.
