Kawaguchiko Ohashi Bridge holds the distinction of being Japan's first bridge constructed within a special national park area. Construction began in October 1968 to alleviate lakeside traffic congestion and was completed in March 1971. In 1987, the bridge was selected as one of Japan's top 100 roads alongside the Fuji Subaru Line, with a commemorative stone monument erected at the south entrance on the Mount Fuji side.

The bridge spans Lake Kawaguchi from north to south, serving as both a vital transportation link and a premier viewing platform for Mount Fuji. The eastern walkway provides exceptional views of Mount Fuji on clear days, making it a popular photography destination. The strategic positioning allows visitors to capture the iconic reflection of Japan's highest peak in the lake's calm waters below.

Visitors can walk across the bridge to experience panoramic views of the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes region. The bridge is completely free to cross on foot, by bicycle, or by car. Previously, there was a toll system from 1971 to 2005, but this has been abolished for greater accessibility. The pedestrian walkway ensures safe passage for those seeking the perfect Mount Fuji photograph or simply wanting to enjoy the elevated perspective of Lake Kawaguchi.

The bridge is approximately a 30-minute walk from Kawaguchiko Station to reach the north side. Several bus stops provide convenient access to both ends of the bridge, with some bus routes crossing directly over it. The area is well-connected to Tokyo by train and bus, making it easily accessible for day trips or longer stays in the Fuji Five Lakes region.

Traveler reviews

Crossing Kawaguchiko Ohashi Bridge by bicycle is an amazing experience. The wide bridge offers a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji with Lake Kawaguchi stretching beautifully below, creating a perfect scenic ride from start to finish. The gentle slope and long distance make the journey much more enjoyable with an electric bicycle, which is highly recommended, especially if you want to fully relax and take in the view without getting too tired. The cool breeze, open space, and unobstructed view of Mount Fuji make this route incredibly refreshing. Riding here feels peaceful and cinematic, especially on a clear day when Mount Fuji stands in full glory. If you’re exploring Kawaguchiko, this bridge is a must-pass route — and doing it on an e-bike makes it even better.

A bridge crossing the famous Kawaguchiko. It is a good place for enjoying the wonderful view of the lake and the Mt. Fuji. It was truly sad that the sky was very cloudy the day I came. There is pedestrian road, so you can walk on it to the other side of the lake.

We stayed at a nearby Airbnb and took the chance to rent bikes from the nearby 7-Eleven. Cycling across the bridge rewarded us with magnificent views of both the lake and Fuji-san. The cycling path is quite narrow—just enough for riders from both directions to pass at the same time. Rental bikes can feel a bit awkward to handle, so do slow down when approaching cyclists coming from the opposite direction.

The best view at Lake Kawaguchiko, but you have to walk a lot… walking to the bridge was very tiring! It was windy, breezy, and extremely cold in January.
