Kiryugaoka Zoo, officially known as Miraihehabatake Yamada Manufacturing Kiryugaoka Zoo, represents a unique collaboration between conservation and local industry in Gunma Prefecture. This zoo is on a small hill found about 10 minutes by car from Kiryu and has become a cornerstone of family entertainment in the region. The facility was established through a partnership with Yamada Manufacturing Company, reflecting Japan's tradition of corporate social responsibility in supporting community amenities.

The zoo's primary significance lies in its role as an accessible wildlife education center for local families and children. The zoo is home to over 50 varieties of animals ranging from larger ones like lions and giraffes to smaller kinds like rabbits and meerkats. Notable residents include lions, giraffes, kangaroos, penguins, monkeys and Asian elephants. The facility serves as an important educational resource, introducing children to wildlife conservation while maintaining breeding programs for several species.

Visitors can expect an intimate zoo experience suitable for families with young children. With free admission and an adjoining amusement park, it is a favorite of local children. The adjacent Earth Care Kiryugaoka Amusement Park enhances the experience with rides and attractions, though these require separate payment. The 430 cherry blossoms planted in the park bloom from late March through early April, making spring an particularly attractive time to visit when families gather for hanami celebrations.

The zoo maintains a compact, walkable layout positioned on a hillside that provides natural viewing areas and scenic overlooks. The facility focuses on close animal encounters rather than expansive habitats, making it particularly appealing to younger visitors. The adjoining amusement park features both modern and traditional carnival rides, with many entertaining 50 yen rides for the very young.

Admission to Kiryugaoka Zoo is completely free, making it one of Japan's most accessible zoological facilities. The amusement park rides operate on a pay-per-ride system, with individual attractions typically costing 100 yen each. This zoo is on a small hill found about 10 minutes by car from Kiryu city center. Public transportation options include local buses from Kiryu Station, though a private vehicle provides the most convenient access to the hilltop location. The nearest major railway connection is Kiryu Station on the JR Ryomo Line, approximately 10 minutes by car from the zoo entrance.

Traveler reviews

I thought it was a small zoo since it’s free but I was wrong. It’s a big zoo with many different species. You can see red pandas up close. Also there is amusement park next to this zoo. It’s really good places for families with children. Adults can enjoy too.
