Authentic and beautiful. A small yet beautiful castle that remains a castle throughout and not turned into a museum. You can explore and imagine how it would have been during the real time. Good explanation given in English for each level for us to understand.
There is a parking available that is about 600¥ beside the playground. Well maintained and very friendly guides.
A beautiful attraction to learn about the histories of Kochi Castle. The path towards it is slightly rough, not as rough as the inside top section since the stairs are pretty high. Do watch your head however.
Theres a very small gift shop and you have to remove your shoes before entering. Please remember you need to pay 500 yen to enter. They do have a combo discount where you pay more but can go to the nearby Museum
It is heaven for Japanese history lovers
Not the most ornate and colourful castle in Japan. It is a petite size castle. The garden is also not as large compared to the one in Tokyo, Osaka or Kobe. Because of that, there is no real rush to cover more ground. One can explore the place leisurely if you desire.
For my visit in May 2026, it was raining and thus I need to undertake a functional visit mode.
There is ample parking next to the castle. The fee is ¥370 for car. Castle entrance fee is ¥500. One particular quirk to. It’s is that you need to park at the assigned lot given to you upon entry. A laminated sheet in English was handed over to me specifying the allocated parking lot and payment details.
English instruction and communication are available when interacting with Parking Attendants and Castle Staffs. They are friendly people.
A beautiful structure perching high above a well maintained landscape with artful trees and steep steps. Come prepared for lots of climbing several flights of stairs. Great architecture and pleasant, tranquil surrounding overlooking the city below. It's free to walk around and up to the castle. There is a small fee to get inside and to the top balcony of the castle. Shoes off as customary everywhere in Japan. A must see while in Kochi.
Great views and authentic wooden stairs – surprisingly quiet!
We were quite surprised by how quiet and uncrowded it was, especially since it was the weekend! When we reached the top floor of the castle tower, we actually had the whole place to ourselves. The view from up there was absolutely fantastic.
Just a quick heads-up for future visitors: climbing up and down inside the castle involves some very steep wooden stairs.
Highly recommended if you are in Kōchi!
