Not the most ornate and colourful castle in Japan. It is a petite size castle. The garden is also not as large compared to the one in Tokyo, Osaka or Kobe. Because of that, there is no real rush to cover more ground. One can explore the place leisurely if you desire.
For my visit in May 2026, it was raining and thus I need to undertake a functional visit mode.
There is ample parking next to the castle. The fee is ¥370 for car. Castle entrance fee is ¥500. One particular quirk to. It’s is that you need to park at the assigned lot given to you upon entry. A laminated sheet in English was handed over to me specifying the allocated parking lot and payment details.
English instruction and communication are available when interacting with Parking Attendants and Castle Staffs. They are friendly people.
Great views and authentic wooden stairs – surprisingly quiet!
We were quite surprised by how quiet and uncrowded it was, especially since it was the weekend! When we reached the top floor of the castle tower, we actually had the whole place to ourselves. The view from up there was absolutely fantastic.
Just a quick heads-up for future visitors: climbing up and down inside the castle involves some very steep wooden stairs.
Highly recommended if you are in Kōchi!
Kochi is one of the stops on our Princess cruise. It is a few mins walk from Hiromi market. Across 711. It was hot so it was a challenge goin up the steps but its cool to see. We didn't go inside bec we are on a time crunch but nice to see up close. Well preserved castle. Also nice views 👌
Kochi Castle stands where castles tend to be built, slightly above us. It is quietly confident, asking for commitment from our legs before offering anything in return. Simply reaching the entrance involves climbing a long flight of steps, the kind that gradually replaces casual sightseeing with awareness of your own breath and body.
The climb is challenging, but fair. With every pause, the view opens up and the city below appears softer and almost grateful. The grounds are beautifully kept and cared for with a steadiness that suggests pride rather than ostentation. Nothing feels neglected or rushed.
What makes Kochi Castle especially memorable is the balance between the effort required and the reward received. It does not welcome you easily, but it does welcome you sincerely. The path is challenging, and your calves will protest, but the scenery responds with quiet generosity.
By the time you reach the top, the castle feels less like a monument you have visited and more like a place you have earned. It feels like a place you have earned.
Lovely scenery, lots of information throughout the walk up. You can take guided tours, or walk up on your own. The stairs can be uneven in places, and it will take some effort to walk all the way up to the castle. We'll worth the walk up, if you can.
