Kokawadera Temple, Kinokawa

Kokawadera Temple is one of the oldest and most significant Buddhist temples in Japan, located in Wakayama Prefecture. Founded in 770 AD during the Nara period, it serves as the third station of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, a sacred route connecting 33 temples dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist deity of mercy. The temple's formal name is Kimiidera Kokawadera, and it has maintained its spiritual importance for over 1,250 years.

The temple's origin is steeming in legend. According to tradition, a hunter named Otomo no Kujiko shot a deer, and upon witnessing its suffering, experienced profound remorse that led him to Buddhism. The temple was established on this site to honor his spiritual awakening. The main hall, designated as a National Treasure, houses a revered statue of Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon) and features stunning examples of traditional Japanese architectural design. The temple grounds also contain numerous Important Cultural Properties, including ancient scrolls and religious artifacts that document centuries of Buddhist practice.

Visitors can experience the temple's serene mountain setting, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The approach includes a stone stairway lined with lanterns, and the temple complex features multiple halls, gardens, and a distinctive multi-story pagoda. The temple is particularly atmospheric during spring cherry blossom season and autumn foliage periods. Pilgrims and tourists alike can participate in traditional activities such as collecting goshuin (temple stamp seals) and exploring the various meditation halls.

Kokawadera Temple is located approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Wakayama city. The most convenient access is via the JR Wakayama Line to Kokawa Station, followed by a 15-minute walk or a short bus ride to the temple grounds. Alternatively, visitors can take a bus directly from Wakayama Station. Admission to the temple grounds is ¥400 for adults, with additional fees for special exhibition areas. The mountain location provides ample free parking for those traveling by car.
