Lake Toya, a jewel of Hokkaido, is not just any lake. It's a masterpiece sculpted by the forces of nature, nestled within the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. This volcanic caldera lake, with its crystal-clear waters, is a sanctuary of peace and natural beauty. The lake owes its existence to epic geological events formed by the eruptions of the still-active Mt. Usu volcano, creating a landscape so unique it feels otherworldly.

Surrounded by lush greenery and mountains that paint a picture-perfect backdrop, Lake Toya offers more than just scenic views. It's a playground for adventure and relaxation alike. From leisurely boat rides that glide over the glassy surface to rejuvenating hot springs that line its shores, this place has a way of touching every soul. The area is rich in activities, with options like private day trips to explore the surrounding beauty, including the fascinating Noboribetsu Bear Park, and luxurious stays at resorts that offer stunning lake vistas right from your window.

What other travelers are saying about Lake Toya

This is my third visit to Lake Toya, and for the first time, I decided to take their cruise. It’s about a 40-minute leisurely ride around the small island in the middle of the lake. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery. Since I visited in winter, the rooftop was closed, so seating was only available in the air-conditioned area. I think it would have been nice to feel the cold winter wind on my face, though! There’s a small snack shop on board, but the prices are quite high. I didn’t buy anything, though I saw a few people getting snacks. Being one of the first in the queue, I managed to snag the best spot at the very front of the ship, giving me an amazing view of the lake. I took many photos and videos, and I hope you enjoy them too.

Lake Tōya becomes the best destination for me in Hokkaido. All great scenery with quiet atmosphere. This time I just have a 1-day trip. But I suggest to have at least 1 night here with the travel route.

Lake Tōya is one of the most beautiful lakes in Hokkaidō, surrounded by mountains and a peaceful natural atmosphere. The water is crystal clear, shimmering in shades of jade green and deep blue that look stunning in every season. Walking along the lakeside or taking a boat ride offers refreshing views that feel calming and unforgettable. The area is also known for its relaxing hot springs, perfect after a day of exploring. At night, the lake becomes even more magical with spectacular fireworks that light up the sky and reflect beautifully on the water. Overall, Lake Tōya is a perfect destination for both relaxation and breathtaking scenery, day and night.

Even with the limits of mist in a January day the views are enchanting. Huge, sweeping views of water, mountains and lakeshore. Even though portions are developed the great majority of the area feels pristine. I am so happy that I made it here. It was easily the highlight of my several days in Hokkaido.

A picturesque lake with many activities and sights along the shore. Tranquil and relaxing. You can drive around the lake. The southern end has a lot of accommodation and food options. The island in the centre: Nakajima, can be reached by ferry. The monthly fireworks display during summer another draw. In all, this place is definitely worth the trip from Sapporo.
