Lake Yasaka, Otake

Last updated Mar 21, 2026

Lake Yasaka is an artificial reservoir created by the Yasaka Dam, located in Otake City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The dam, completed as one of Japan's largest multipurpose dams with a height of 120 meters and total storage capacity of 112 million cubic meters, serves flood control, water supply, and hydroelectric power generation functions. The project transformed the natural landscape into a significant recreational lake that has become an integral part of the region's infrastructure and tourism offerings.

The lake holds particular significance as a prime example of Japan's post-war dam construction efforts and modern water management systems. With a circumference of 40.0 kilometers and maximum depth of 95 meters, Lake Yasaka represents one of the country's most substantial artificial water bodies. The surrounding forested hills and mountain terrain create a scenic backdrop that attracts nature enthusiasts and photographers throughout the seasons.

Visitors to Lake Yasaka can explore the extensive shoreline through walking and cycling paths that offer varied perspectives of the water and surrounding landscape. The lake provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and peaceful contemplation along its banks. The dam structure itself serves as an impressive engineering viewpoint, allowing visitors to appreciate both the technical achievement and the natural beauty of the flooded valley. Photography enthusiasts particularly value the area during cherry blossom season and autumn foliage periods when the surrounding mountains create striking reflections on the water surface.

Lake Yasaka is accessible by car via National Routes connecting to Otake City in western Hiroshima Prefecture. The nearest major transportation hub is Hiroshima City, approximately 30 kilometers southeast of the lake. Public transportation options include local buses from Otake Station, though private vehicle access provides the most convenient approach to various points along the shoreline. Admission to the lake area is free, making it an accessible destination for day trips and extended stays. Parking facilities are available near the dam and at several recreational access points around the perimeter.

Traveler reviews

The area around Lake Yasaka has many sports parks, tennis courts, parks, and amusement parks. It's a well-maintained area blessed with natural beauty for sightseeing. I wanted to walk across the Yasaka Bridge to see the lake's fountain, so I looked for parking near the bridge but couldn't find any. There was Miwa Park Golf near the bridge, but I thought it was off-limits to anyone other than golfers, so I turned back. I later found out that Miwa Park Golf has a restaurant with a great view. They also have a lunch menu, so it was a shame I couldn't use it.

A long, narrow lake with a slightly complex shape. It gives off a relaxed impression.

On weekends and holidays, many anglers from the surrounding area come here to fish for black bass. It's a popular spot, with some even catching fish over 50cm. The lakeside restaurant, Yaei, is also popular.
