Meguro River

The Meguro River flows approximately 8 kilometers through central Tokyo, running from the Shibuya and Meguro wards southeast toward Shinagawa before eventually connecting to Tokyo Bay. Originally a natural waterway, the river was significantly modified during Tokyo's rapid urbanization in the 20th century, with much of its course straightened and its banks reinforced with concrete. Despite these changes, the Meguro River has evolved into one of Tokyo's most cherished urban watercourses, particularly celebrated for its seasonal beauty.

The river's primary cultural significance stems from its role as one of Tokyo's premier cherry blossom viewing destinations. Approximately 800 cherry trees, predominantly Somei Yoshino variety, line both banks of the river, creating a stunning canopy of pink blossoms each spring, typically from late March to early April. During the annual Meguro River Cherry Blossom Festival, millions of visitors walk along the riverside promenades beneath the blooming trees, with lanterns illuminating the blossoms after dark. The scene transforms the industrial waterway into a temporary natural sanctuary that exemplifies Tokyo's ability to integrate nature within dense urban environments.

Visitors can experience the Meguro River by strolling along the paved walkways that run parallel to both banks, with the most popular section extending from Naka-Meguro Station to Meguro Station. The Naka-Meguro area offers numerous cafes, boutiques, and restaurants with riverside seating, making it ideal for leisurely exploration year-round. Beyond cherry blossom season, the river provides a pleasant walking route shaded by the mature trees, and in summer months, the Meguro River Fureai Festival features traditional performances and food stalls. Small yakatabune-style pleasure boats occasionally operate during peak bloom season, offering river-level views of the blossoms.

The Meguro River is accessible via multiple stations along the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and Tokyu Toyoko Line, with Naka-Meguro Station serving as the most convenient access point for the main viewing area. Ikejiri-Ohashi Station and Yutenji Station provide access to less crowded sections. There is no admission fee to walk along the river or view the cherry blossoms, as all riverside paths are public. The area can become extremely crowded during peak bloom weekends, so visiting on weekdays or arriving early morning offers a more comfortable experience.

One of the most famous sakura viewing place in Tokyo. Good: easy to get, amazing lighting for night Sakura view 5-8pm; very center, many things to do nearby Bad: too crowded, and the Sakura trees were cut in 2024, making it not that amazing any more. Also, there are many blocks so you can’t see the river well

The stunning sakura trees lining the river create a breathtaking pink tunnel, especially when illuminated at night. Though I visited during the non-cherry blossom season, the peace and tranquility of this place has my heart. I can only imagine how this place transforms during the Sakura season. A quiet lane running parallel to the lake is ideal for a leisurely walk. The near by lanes and by-lanes (leading upto Meguro station) too offer beautiful views of the city, lake and blossoms.
