Mount Kurikoma, Kurihara

Mount Kurikoma stands at 1,626 meters above sea level in the center of the Tohoku region, straddling the borders of Miyagi, Iwate, and Akita prefectures. This active stratovolcano forms part of the Kurikoma Quasi-National Park and has been designated an Ecological Conservation Area. Known as the "Queen of the Ou Mountain Range" for its graceful cone-shaped form, the mountain has experienced recent seismic activity and eruptions, though it remains a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

The mountain is celebrated for its spectacular autumn foliage, which blankets the slopes from late September to mid-October in what locals call "God's Carpet." The vibrant display of fall colors has made Mount Kurikoma one of Japan's most photographed mountains during this season. Beyond autumn, the mountain offers year-round natural beauty including volcanic landscapes, alpine wetlands, and sweeping panoramic views across the Tohoku region. Mount Kurikoma is also listed among the 200 Famous Mountains of Japan.

Visitors can explore nine hiking trails of varying difficulty levels, making the mountain accessible to both beginners and experienced climbers. The most popular route, the Higashi Kurikoma Trail from Iwakagamidaira, takes approximately 80-90 minutes to reach the summit. After about an hour of climbing, the trail breaks through the treeline onto a plateau offering unobstructed views of distant peaks. The Sukawa Trail provides an alternative descent into volcanic terrain and leads to Sukawa Onsen hot spring, where hikers can relax in rustic open-air baths. Loop hikes are possible on the Miyagi side of the mountain, with overnight accommodation available at traditional hot spring inns.

Access to Mount Kurikoma varies by season and location. The Iwakagamidaira trailhead is served by a special access bus from Kurikoma-Kogen Station during the autumn foliage season, available by reservation only. Buses between Sukawa Onsen and Ichinoseki Station operate from late April through early November. Visitors with private vehicles can drive to lower parking areas and use shuttle services to reach trailheads. An environmental cooperation fee of 500 yen per person is collected during peak season, with limited-time passes available for 1,000 yen per individual or higher rates for group buses. The mountain is free to access outside these designated periods.
