Nobeyama Radio Observatory, Minamimaki

Located at an elevation of 1,350 meters in the mountains near Minamimaki village in Nagano Prefecture, the Nobeyama Radio Observatory serves as a division of Japan's National Astronomical Observatory. The observatory consists of three major radio instruments and has been conducting world-class astronomical observations since its establishment, contributing significantly to radio astronomy research including capturing signs of black holes and the formation process of life material substances.

The centerpiece of the facility is the 45-meter Radio Telescope, one of the world's largest radio telescopes that observes in millimeter wavelengths (1mm-10mm). Its receivers operate at multiple frequencies including 1, 2, 3.75, 9.4, 17, 35, and 80 GHz in both left and right polarizations. The observatory also houses the Nobeyama Millimeter Array consisting of six 10-meter diameter telescopes, and the Nobeyama Radioheliograph with eighty-four 80-centimeter antennas dedicated to solar observations.

Visitors can explore a self-guided tour course that is freely accessible to the public, featuring explanatory panels and views of observational instruments and research results. The tour allows guests to witness these impressive radio telescopes up close and understand their role in astronomical discoveries. An annual open campus event is held during summer vacation, typically around August 20th, featuring additional activities and presentations.

The observatory is accessible by public transportation via JR Chuo Line to Kobuchizawa Station, then JR Koumi Line to Nobeyama Station, followed by a 40-minute walk. Visitors can also reach the facility by car. The facility is located at 462-2 Nobeyama, Minamimaki, Minamisaku, Nagano, 384-1305. Admission to the public tour course is free, making it an accessible destination for those interested in astronomy and scientific research.
