Oboke Gorge

Oboke Gorge is a dramatic river valley located in western Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku Island, carved over millions of years by the Yoshino River through crystalline schist rock formations. The gorge stretches approximately 8 kilometers along the river and features sheer cliffs rising up to 200 meters above the water. The name "Oboke" translates to "big step" in the local dialect, referring to the dangerous footing along the historic paths that once traversed the gorge walls.

The geological significance of Oboke lies in its exposed layers of metamorphic rock, which have earned the gorge designation as part of the Iya Valley region within Tsurugisan Quasi-National Park. The distinctive blue-green schist formations display remarkable striations and folding patterns, making this one of Japan's premier locations for observing mountain-building processes. The area has been recognized by the Japanese government for its outstanding natural beauty since the park's establishment in 1964.

Visitors can experience the gorge primarily through sightseeing boat cruises that navigate the calmer sections of the river, offering close views of the rock formations and seasonal foliage. These 30-minute excursions operate from the Oboke Boat Landing and provide commentary on the geology and local history. More adventurous travelers can participate in whitewater rafting expeditions through the rapids, particularly in the adjacent Koboke ("small step") section downstream, which features Class III and IV rapids suitable for experienced rafters from spring through autumn.

Access to Oboke Gorge is via the JR Dosan Line, with visitors disembarking at Oboke Station, located approximately 3 kilometers from the main boat landing area. Local buses and taxis connect the station to the gorge facilities, though service frequency is limited. Visitors arriving by car can reach the gorge via National Route 32, which parallels the Yoshino River through the valley. The boat cruises operate year-round weather permitting, with admission priced at approximately ¥1,200 for adults. The museum entrance costs around ¥600.
