What other travelers are saying about Raizan Senryoji Daisouin, Itoshima
This temple is truly a place worth visiting. Even if the autumn leaves haven’t turned red yet, the scenery of the mountain temple is still breathtaking and peaceful. In autumn, it’s definitely one of the must-see spots.
I highly recommend paying the entrance fee to go inside — the “五百羅漢” statues are incredibly impressive, each with different expressions and lifelike details. 千手觀音 is equally magnificent, and the sound of sutra chanting inside the hall creates a deeply spiritual and calming atmosphere.
It’s a moving and memorable experience — both culturally and spiritually enriching. Absolutely worth visiting, no matter the season. 🙏✨
The peak season is mid-November to early December when the 400 maple trees display autumn colors. The temple is open year-round. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends during autumn.
By car, it takes approximately 40 minutes via Route 202. By public transport, take the JR Chikuhi Line to Chikuzen-Maebaru Station, then taxi for 20 minutes. There is no direct bus service.
Admission is 400 yen for adults and 200 yen for children. This covers access to all temple grounds and buildings open to visitors.
Yes, on-site parking is available but has limited capacity. It fills quickly during autumn weekends. Arrive early in the morning or visit on weekdays for better availability.
Yes, photography is permitted in most areas including the grounds, maple forest, and exterior buildings. Some interior sacred spaces may restrict photography.
26.11.25 The view of garden was impressive. Please keeep check the post of others reviewed for the update if you wish to visit at the peak time. If you wish to see only garden the entrance fee per person cost only 200yen.
Gorgeous and serene temple. I recommend getting the ticket for the garden and the temple. Inside the temple a monk gives a small tour (all in Japanese). There’s a lot of iconography and also more views. The gardens are also beautiful. Especially in November. Highly recommend making the trip.
This is a very beautiful temple with such a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The view from the area is stunning, and the surroundings make it a great place to just slow down and take everything in. There are a lot of Buddhas here, which makes the place feel even more special and meaningful. It’s truly a beautiful spot to visit and enjoy some quiet time.
We have visited many temples in Japan during our many visits and the time we lived in the country. Most of the famous ones are difficult to enjoy due to the many tourists visiting them. It is hard to enjoy the spiritual experience of a buddhist temple if it is packed with people. But this temple is different because of its location, which is hard to reach if you don’t have a car.
In addition, the temple is located in a forest with some elevation differences within the temple compound making it breathtakingly beautiful and also very quiet.
The staff and the monks are very friendly and accommodating. We even had a chance to enjoy a private prayer session for our small family. The main shrine (photography not allowed) is carved in wood and features incredible detail. The tour inside the main temple is stunning in every regard. In the back of the temple there are 500 small buddha statues.
At the ticket office you can buy small bracelets, rings and other things to support the temple.
If you have a car and are in the Fukuoka region, this is a very nice visit to include in your planning.
