Shikano Castle Ruins Park, Tottori

Shikano Castle Ruins Park is located in Tottori Prefecture and preserves the historical site of a castle that dates back to the Sengoku (Warring States) period. The castle first appears in historical records in 1544 when the local Shikano clan was conquered by the Amago clan. The site became particularly significant under Kamei Korenori, who received Shikano Castle as a reward for his service in 1578 and controlled the castle town from 1581. Korenori's international outlook influenced the castle's design, and the castle structure incorporates Buddhist-inspired names for its facilities, reflecting his engagement in trade ship diplomacy.

Today, only stone walls and moats remain as archaeological features, with the park maintained on the former castle grounds. The site's main attraction is its natural beauty, particularly during cherry blossom season when approximately 500 Yoshino cherry trees bloom. A walking path leads to the former castle tower site at an altitude of 148 meters, offering views overlooking the Japan Sea. The surrounding Shikano castle town still reflects the remnants of old town districts including the samurai residence quarters, upper and lower merchant districts, and the craftworker district.

Visitors can explore the park's moat system and stone foundations while walking among the cherry trees in spring or enjoying autumn foliage at nearby Shiroyama mountain. The historic town offers additional attractions including traditional machiya townhouses, local restaurants in renovated buildings, cafes, galleries, and specialty shops. The area provides a quieter alternative to more crowded tourist destinations while offering insight into feudal-era castle town planning.

The park is located around 20 minutes' drive from the Tottori Nishi Interchange of the Tottori Expressway. Public transportation is available with local buses departing from Tottori Station bound for Shikano. The park offers free admission and is open year-round for visitors to explore the castle ruins and surrounding grounds at their leisure.
