The Uradome Coast Island Cruise Pleasure Boat operates along one of Japan's most geologically significant coastlines within the San'in Kaigan National Park in Tottori Prefecture. The rocky coast consists of 30-60 million-year-old granite formed during the era when the Japanese archipelago was part of the Asian continent, before the Sea of Japan existed. The landscape has been sculpted by the raging waves and harsh weather of the Sea of Japan over unimaginably long periods, creating the dramatic coastal features visitors see today.

The Uradome Coast stretches approximately 15-16 kilometers along the Sea of Japan on the eastern tip of Tottori Prefecture, featuring marine-eroded rock formations, white sandy beaches, and dense scrub pines. The area holds special significance as part of the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, which preserves geological records spanning from Japan's continental origins to the formation of the Sea of Japan. The coastline's complex ria formation and distinctive granite structures make it one of Japan's premier examples of coastal geological evolution.

The 40-minute cruise navigates through narrow passages between small islands and sea stacks that larger vessels cannot access. The crystal-clear waters offer visibility up to 25 meters deep, allowing passengers to observe the submarine landscape. Visitors experience dozens of tunnels, caves, and unusual rock formations wherever the ocean waters flow. Small boats can enter caves and shallow coves that other sightseeing vessels cannot reach. The captains provide commentary while skillfully maneuvering through jagged rocks and close to towering cliffs. Passengers often enjoy feeding seagulls that follow the boats throughout the journey.

The cruise departs from Otani Pier near the mouth of the Gamo River at Ajiro Port, located about 10 kilometers east of the famous Tottori Sand Dunes. Boats operate from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., March through November, departing every hour. The departure point is accessible by local bus services from Tottori city center or JR Iwami Station. Visitors should note that sea conditions may affect operations, and the experience can be physically demanding due to ocean swells. The boats accommodate various group sizes, with smaller vessels providing more intimate access to narrow coastal features.

Traveler reviews

Very nice experience and service ! We reach there but unable to take a sightseeing boat out to sea cause by the weather ,then! The information counter let their staff carry us to the view point without any fees! Then fetch us back to the bus stop! Very nice service again !

Beautiful natural landscapes but a pity that small boat rides were not available that day due to huge waves. Quite inaccessible with limited buses ppl plying the route if you do not have personal transport.
Unfortunately due to weather reason, no cruise was available when we arrived. But the staff was very nice and kind to drive us to a few sightseeing spots nearby for 30min before the next bus comes. Hope next year we can come and take the cruise.
The Uradome Coast boat tour was a pleasant experience, though I arrived just in time to miss one departure and had to wait for the 3:30 PM boat. The tour offers three options: a standard boat ride from March to November for 1,800 yen, an adventure boat starting in late April for 2,500 yen, and a glass-bottom boat available from late May. I took the standard boat, which lasted about 40 minutes. The captain provided continuous commentary, but it was only in Japanese—having multilingual audio guides would make the explanations more accessible. The staff were polite and happy to help take photos for tourists. If you’re visiting Tottori and haven’t tried it, the boat tour is definitely worth a go.
I missed this last year because of the weather but I visited again in June. I had a good time. The water was a bit choppy but it was nice to get out and sail around the coast line. A nice view of the sand dunes in the distance.
