What other travelers are saying about Tosa Kuroshio Railway Gomen
I enjoyed crab today here. It is fresh and sweet, reasonably priced. Highly recommended. There is also a farmer's market here and an aquarium (free admission) at the same location. A nice visit
It may not be as big as some other market and not as much choice but there are most of the things you’d want at a fish market to keep it interesting.
Gave it a high score as the seafood don are spectacular value for money at 1000 yen each.
Can taste how fresh it was and really worth the money.
The market is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily and operates with no regular closed days except New Year's Day. Individual restaurants and food shops within the market may have varying hours, with some establishments opening at 10:00 AM and others closing earlier than the main market. It's advisable to visit in the morning or early afternoon for the best selection, as many shops close by 4:00 PM.
The market offers different seafood throughout the year, including hatahata fish and mosa shrimp in spring and autumn, premium iwagaki oysters (known as Natsuki) and white squid in summer, and Matsuba crab in winter. Matsuba crab, available from November to February, is the most popular seasonal offering with its refined taste and densely packed flesh. White squid season runs from early summer through late fall, with peak availability in July and August.
Yes, fish dealers at the market offer local shipping services for fresh seafood purchased on-site. This service allows visitors to buy fresh fish and have it delivered directly to their accommodation or home address. The market's location at a working fishing port ensures that seafood is extremely fresh, making it ideal for shipping arrangements.
The market features an adjacent restaurant section with numerous seafood dining establishments. The most notable is Kaiyoutei, a fish-tank eatery that prepares seafood directly from live tanks. Their signature dish is whole white squid sashimi, served with exceptional freshness. Other restaurants offer various seafood dishes including kaisendon (seafood rice bowls), sashimi assortments, and seasonal preparations of crab and other local catches.
From JR Tottori Station, take a bus that runs approximately 30-40 minutes to either Karo Kaigan or Kanikkokan-mae (Kanikko-kan Mae) bus stops. The Hinomaru Bus Karo Loop Line stops directly in front of the market. Alternatively, Tottoridaigaku-Mae Station is the nearest train station, located approximately a 36-minute walk or 20-minute drive away. Visitors traveling by car will find accessible parking spaces near the entrance. Entry to the market is free, with individual purchases charged separately.
