What other travelers are saying about Shinhotaka Ropeway
What an amazing place, you can climb up to the top of the mountain to see Japanese alps around you, which is so magical. I went there when the snowfall happened so it’s really cold outside!
It has like 2 gondolas for you to climb up, a tip: please just moving forward to the top so you can have this path to see the alps more clearly. Very interesting experience for someone who have never experienced snow before.
The snow is so soft and powdery and we enjoy playing with it too much I think hahaha. Nonetheless, it’s a really great experience. You could also enjoy some hot chocolate or any snack at the cafetaria.
Shinhotaka Ropeway is Japan's only double-decker cable car system, with gondolas that can accommodate up to 121 passengers across two levels. It also holds the distinction of being the highest ropeway station in Japan at 2,156 meters elevation, providing unparalleled access to the Northern Japan Alps and panoramic views of the Hotaka Mountain Range.
A typical visit takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, including the two-stage ropeway journey (about 15 minutes total each way) and time at the upper observation deck to take in the views and explore the facilities. Visitors planning to hike should allocate additional time depending on their chosen trail. When factoring in the 100-minute bus journey each way from Takayama, plan for a half-day to full-day excursion.
From Takayama, take the Nohi Bus to Shinhotaka Ropeway (約1 hour 20 minutes, 1,570 yen). From Matsumoto, take the Alpico Bus via Kamikochi or connect through Takayama. The nearest bus stop is Shinhotaka Ropeway Station with free parking available for drivers visiting this Okuhida attraction.
Each season offers distinct experiences. Autumn (late September to early November) is particularly popular for spectacular fall foliage displays across the mountains. Winter provides dramatic snow-covered landscapes and crisp mountain air, while summer offers comfortable temperatures and clear hiking conditions. Spring brings fresh greenery and the melting of winter snows. Weather conditions can affect visibility, so checking forecasts before visiting is recommended.
Yes, both the base station and upper station offer visitor amenities. The upper Nishihotakaguchi Station features restaurants serving local cuisine, gift shops with regional products and souvenirs, restrooms, and both indoor and outdoor observation areas including a rooftop terrace. The base station also provides dining options, shops, and visitor information services. A small shrine is located near the upper station for those interested in cultural sites.
20251228 - came here using 3 day okuhida maguruto pass. Took ropeway up to the tallest viewpoint. The view was amazing! You get to see japanese alps view of snowy white mountain top with clouds against show white base. The weather was cold and snowing and you get to take nice photos here. Recommended to come!
The Shinhotaka ropeway was amazing. Well worth going and checking it out. We got the bus pass from Takayama and the ropeway tickets in a bundle in Klook. There are souvenir shops at the base, mid station and the top station, along with great cafe at the top for lunch. You’ll need time at the top to explore the trails.
During winter, expect snow up on the trail, along with incredible views of the alps. We found that clouds obscured our view sometimes, but if you’re happy to wait, the wind will usually blow them away.
Really worth spending a whole day doing this.
Beautiful scenic views of the alps. Cable car service is very organized which have scheduled ride in every 30 minutes. The whole route have good views on the alps. Cable cars are fast and clean.
There are cafe and restaurant at all levels. Family, kids and couple will enjoy it.
Mountain hiking is available where many enthusiast geared up to hike the mountain.
Had a really great experience at Shinhotaka Ropeway. The views from the top were stunning, and the double-deck cable car ride itself felt unique and very smooth. The area is peaceful, the air is fresh, and everything is well-organized for visitors.
It does get crowded at certain times and the tickets can feel a bit pricey, but the scenery and overall experience were absolutely worth it. A wonderful spot to enjoy Japan’s mountain landscape.
