Shirakawa Water Source

The Shirakawa water source in Kumamoto Prefecture is one of Japan's most celebrated natural springs, recognized as part of the Kumamoto Groundwater system that supplies drinking water to approximately 740,000 residents of Kumamoto City. Located in the Minami Aso region at the foot of Mount Aso, this pristine spring has been designated as one of Japan's 100 Famous Water Sources by the Ministry of the Environment since 1985, acknowledging its exceptional purity and cultural importance.

The spring produces an extraordinary volume of 60 tons of water per minute, or approximately 60,000 liters, maintaining a constant temperature of around 14 degrees Celsius year-round. This remarkable flow rate makes it one of the most voluminous springs in Kyushu. The water originates from rainfall and snowmelt on the Aso caldera, which filters through volcanic rock layers over many years, emerging as exceptionally pure groundwater. Local residents have relied on this water source for centuries, and it continues to serve as drinking water without requiring purification treatment.

Visitors can observe the crystal-clear water emerging from the spring and flowing into surrounding waterways, where the clarity allows visibility of aquatic plants and fish swimming in the streams. The site includes a small park area where you can access the spring directly, fill bottles with the fresh water, and observe the natural environment shaped by this abundant water source. The water is safe to drink, and many visitors bring containers to take some home. The surrounding landscape features lush vegetation supported by the moisture-rich environment, creating a refreshing atmosphere particularly appreciated during warmer months.

The Shirakawa water source is located approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Kumamoto City in Minami Aso Village. Access by car takes roughly 90 minutes from central Kumamoto via Route 57 or the Aso Panorama Line. Public transportation requires taking the JR Hohi Line to Tateno Station, followed by a local bus or taxi for the remaining distance of about 15 kilometers. Limited bus services operate in the area, making private transportation more practical. Admission is free, and the site remains accessible throughout the year, though facilities are basic with minimal infrastructure beyond parking areas and simple pathways to the spring itself.
