My visit to the Suntory Hakushu Distillery was absolutely impressive. The entire visitor area and the facilities are incredibly well-thought-out, blending beautifully into the surrounding nature.
We ended up taking the water factory tour, and even though it was conducted entirely in Japanese, it was still a highly enjoyable and visual experience. What stood out the most was how perfectly the storytelling matched what we saw. The guide detailed exactly how much they care for the surrounding forest to ensure they get the purest, highest-quality natural water, making you appreciate the entire process so much more.
Even though I didn't get a chance to go on the official whisky distillery tour this time, just walking around the pristine grounds was a really pleasant way to spend the day. Plus, you can actually smell the rich scent of fermenting malt in the air when you get close to the production buildings!
It's a fantastic, peaceful place to visit in Yamanashi—whether you are a big fan of whisky or just appreciate great craftsmanship and nature.
Beautiful grounds with lots of natural vegetation that was especially standout because we went during Sakura season and many trees were in full bloom. The distillery offers tasting tours that must be booked in advance and was that ever special! If you are a whisky enthusiast, then this stop is a must when you are in Japan. The tour at Hakushu is similar to the one at Yamazaki (both are Suntory so that makes sense) but this one would be more enjoyable as the grounds where the distillery is on is situated in the middle of a forest that you walk through to get to the tasting room. I won’t share the tasting experience as you need to come here to experience it yourself! Totally worth the effort to transport yourself here.
Visiting Hakushu and Yamazaki takes a bit of planning but is worth it for fans of Japanese whisky. Firstly knowing a date range for your visit so you can apply in the lottery system for a slot two months ahead. Then confirming and paying within the allocated time. Then comes the train journey. At Hakushu, for what you pay (tasting tour) you get access to grounds, tour, tasting (including making a full highball), nosing glass, and ability to buy one limited release. Great value. Not posting more photos to spoil the surprise. Only complaint is the real time translation system (instead of the pre recorded system) they are using during the tour which doesn't seem to do a very good job.
The tour is great, the grounds are unique and beautiful. I just wish the souvenir shop and tasting lounge would be better since the Hakushu Distillery is so much more expensive and hard to get to than the Yamazaki Distillery.
The tour and tastings at the lounge are almost identical except that you can try the composite whiskies at the respective distilleries(Yamazaki composition whiskies at the Yamazaki Distillery and the Hakushu Composition Whiskies at the Hakushu Distillery)
The gift shop options are generally better than what you may find locally, but definitely check because the first time we came (last year) it was cheaper in our local area, but this time it was cheaper at the distillery itself. We are from the US and we ended up buying the Distillery Exclusive and the non-age statement Hakushu, having found the distillery exclusive in full bottles at the LAX airpor tin the duty free store.
They sell the non-age statement and the 12 yr Hakushu but it would be great for all the trouble you went through to get there if they'd offer some of the exclusive Hakushu Collections such as the Fall Spanish Oak Release we managed to stumble upon at the Haneda Airport duty free location. Suntory should really prioritize unique experiences at the distillery and since they have not been doing that, I am seriously considering not visiting the Hakushu after 3 years of continuous visits
One of the best distillery tours out there. Their commitment to the environment is also astounding. The gift shop gets crowded easily and the wait time is a lot more.
