Tamatsukuri Onsen, Matsue

Colloquial AreaPolitical

Tamatsukuri Onsen is one of Japan's oldest hot spring resorts, with records dating back to 733 AD when it was documented in the Ancient Chronicles of Izumo as "The Bath of the Gods." Located in Tamayu, Shimane Prefecture, this historic onsen lies conveniently between the cities of Matsue and Izumo, making it an accessible retreat in the scenic San'in region.

According to Japanese mythology, gods are said to have bathed in these waters annually since the creation of Japan by Izanagi and Izanami. The ancient gazetteer describes the springs with the phrase "Enter once to become beautiful, enter twice to cure all illnesses," establishing the onsen's long-standing reputation for therapeutic and beautifying properties. The waters are sulfate springs with temperatures ranging from 50-70°C, and their mineral content has earned them the nickname "natural lotion" for their renowned skin-beautifying effects.

The resort town features 22 traditional Japanese inns along the banks of the Tamayu River, which flows through the heart of the area into Lake Shinji. Visitors can choose between intimate traditional guesthouses and larger luxury hotels that accommodate hundreds of guests. The town includes public footbaths, bathing facilities, souvenir shops, cafes, restaurants, and statues depicting Japanese mythological figures. Notable attractions include Seigonji Temple and Tamatsukuriyu Shrine, which reflect the area's spiritual connections. The riverside setting becomes particularly scenic during cherry blossom season and in the evening when traditional lamplights illuminate the streets.

Tamatsukuri Onsen can be reached via shuttle bus from Izumo Airport, with the journey taking approximately 30 minutes. From Matsue, the nearest major city, visitors can access the onsen by car, bus, or rail. The area has its own train station, Tamatsukuri-Onsen Station, served by local rail lines. Most accommodations offer packages that include both lodging and bathing access, with individual ryokan providing their own thermal baths for guests. Public bathing facilities are also available throughout the town for day visitors.
