Tatsukushi Coast, Tosashimizu

The distinctive sandstone formations at Tatsukushi Coast were created approximately 20 to 15 million years ago through a series of tremors and earthquakes, then gradually sculpted over time by the relentless Kuroshio Current. The name Tatsukushi roughly means "dragon lying down," referencing the mountain formation behind the coast. The coast is part of Shikoku's Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park, making it a geologically significant destination that reflects Japan's dynamic natural history.

The coast features unique rock formations shaped by sea erosion, including distinctive shapes resembling large bamboo stalks and honeycomb patterns in the sandstone and mudstone. Tatsukushi is home to one of Japan's largest coral reefs, where warm waters remain constant year-round and support abundant colorful fish and shellfish. The coral reef colony in Minokoshi Bay has been designated as a natural monument of Kochi Prefecture. The combination of dramatic geological formations and thriving marine ecosystems makes this a destination for both nature enthusiasts and geology students.

Visitors can explore the coast through several experiences. The Tatsukushi Kaigan Walking Trail offers a 30-minute course along the coastline with unique stone formations, and includes access to the Umi-no-gallery, a museum dedicated to seashells. Glass-bottom boat tours provide views of the marine ecology and honeycomb sandstone formations. The Tatsukushi Visitor Center Uminowa introduces the coast's geology, wildlife, and marine life, with a sightseeing concierge desk for arranging activities.

Tatsukushi is located in Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture, on the southern coast of Shikoku. The site can be reached by train from Kochi Station to Nakamura Station, followed by local transportation. The seashell museum has an admission fee of ¥300 for adults and ¥100 for elementary and junior high school students. The marine park entrance costs ¥900 for adults and ¥450 for children, with glass-bottom boat rides priced at ¥1,560 for adults and ¥780 for children. Sightseeing boat cruises (35-minute round trip) cost ¥2,000 for adults and ¥1,000 for children. The site has parking available for 70 vehicles.
