Tokachi River

3.9 (105)RiverNatural FeatureEstablishment

The Tokachi River is a marvel of nature in Hokkaido. This river stretches over 156 kilometers, flowing from the Tokachi Mountains through the fertile Tokachi Plain. It's known for its rich ecosystem and stunning seasonal changes.

In spring and summer, the riverbanks burst with wildflowers and lush greenery. Farmers use its waters to irrigate fields, making the region famous for its agriculture. Autumn transforms the landscape into a tapestry of red, orange, and yellow, drawing photographers and nature lovers. Winter brings a serene, snowy blanket, creating a peaceful scene.

The river is home to various fish species, including salmon and trout, attracting anglers from all over. Birdwatchers can spot rare species like the Steller's sea eagle and the white-tailed eagle.

The Tokachi River also plays a key role in local festivals. The Tokachigawa Swan Festival showcases hundreds of swans that migrate to the area in the winter. At night, the river is illuminated with colorful lights, adding magic to the already picturesque setting.

For those seeking relaxation, the nearby Tokachigawa Onsen offers hot springs with waters said to have healing properties. Soaking in these thermal baths with a view of the river is an unforgettable experience.

Whenever I enter Tokachi, I always stay at a hotel in Tokachigawa Onsen. I sometimes have friends in Shimizu Town, so I stay the night before before visiting. However, it's always foggy and I rarely see sunny skies. In winter, swans rest their wings here!
