Tokyo Toy Museum

The Tokyo Toy Museum opened in 2008 in Shinjuku's Yotsuya district, though its parent organization, the Japan Good Toy Committee, has been promoting quality toys and play culture since 1985. The museum relocated to its current location in a renovated elementary school building, preserving the nostalgic atmosphere of the original 1935 structure while creating dedicated spaces for hands-on toy experiences.

The museum serves as both a cultural institution and interactive play space, housing approximately 10,000 toys from Japan and around the world. It emphasizes the importance of traditional wooden toys and analog play in an increasingly digital age, functioning as a center for toy research and education. The facility particularly celebrates Japanese craftsmanship through its collection of handmade wooden toys created by artisans across the country, many designated as "good toys" by the organization's rigorous selection process.

Visitors can explore multiple themed rooms designed for different age groups, from the Baby Wood Room filled with smooth wooden toys for infants to game rooms featuring board games and traditional Japanese toys like kendama and koma tops. The Toy Forest showcases approximately 100,000 wooden balls in a large pool where children and adults can play together. Experienced toy curators, called "toy consultants," are stationed throughout the museum to demonstrate toys and engage with families. The museum also hosts regular workshops where visitors can create their own toys under expert guidance.

The museum is located a 7-minute walk from Yotsuya-Sanchome Station, accessible via the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line. Adult admission costs ¥1,100, children aged 6 months to elementary school age pay ¥800, and infants under 6 months enter free. A special pair ticket for one adult and one child is available for ¥1,700. The museum operates a membership system for regular visitors, and advance online reservations are recommended, especially on weekends and holidays when capacity limits apply.
