Toratarou Yoshimura's Residence in Kochi is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and architecture. Built in the late Edo period, this house showcases traditional Japanese design with a focus on simplicity and elegance. The wooden structure and thatched roof reflect the style of the era.

The residence belonged to Toratarou Yoshimura, a notable figure in Kochi's history. The house is well-preserved, giving visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle of the time. The interiors feature tatami mats, sliding doors, and a traditional hearth. The garden surrounding the house is equally charming, with well-kept plants and a peaceful pond.

One of the key attractions is the exquisite detailing found in the woodwork and joinery, which highlights the craftsmanship of the period. Visitors can explore various rooms, each serving different purposes, from living quarters to guest rooms.

The residence often hosts cultural events and tea ceremonies, providing an authentic experience of Japanese traditions.

What other travelers are saying about Toratarou Yoshimura's Residence

Great friendly family-owned business. I’ve been here maybe once a month since moving to Japan! Definitely worth the trip and many things to see nearby. Delicious udon, sweets and drinks!

we were passing through and stopped to check out this historial site, but was greeted with a cup of tea....such hospitality 🥰
I stopped by while passing by. It's easy to enter, and the owner is friendly and easy to talk to. They also serve delicious soba and udon noodles.
Admission is free. Friendly staff. You get a stamp on your Ryoma Passport if you spend 500 yen or more on food, drink or purchases. I was given a set of sweets and tea. I was glad I could relax there. They also serve udon and soba noodles, and if you make a reservation three days in advance, you can get a gozen meal.
I parked near the bottom, but there's a parking lot near the mansion. It was a hot day, but they offered free tea. They were run by a married couple? They seemed to offer drinks and snacks, but I spent my time looking at the posters. The interior was beautiful, and the veranda was cool. The restrooms were clean, too. Admission is free, there's free Wi-Fi, and I was able to relax for a bit. They also had an almanac, and apparently it was the same school that Sakamoto Ryoma and Takechi Hanpeita attended. He was two years older than Sakamoto Ryoma? He died at the age of 26, and apparently he was the first person to escape from the Tosa clan (lol). There were so many things I didn't know. If you've come this far, this is a place you should definitely stop by! If you visit Hayase no Ipponbashi Bridge, you should definitely stop by here too! They also have tourist maps of the nearby area, so it was easy to find directions from the owner.
