Toyama Castle Park

Toyama Castle Park stands in the heart of Toyama city, centered around the reconstructed Toyama Castle, a historical fortress that dates back to the 16th century. The original castle was built in 1543 by the Jinbo clan and later became the seat of power for the Maeda clan, who ruled the Kaga Domain during the Edo period. Though the original structure was destroyed, the current three-story donjon was reconstructed in 1954 and now houses the Sato Memorial Art Museum, which displays local historical artifacts, samurai armor, and art collections related to the region's feudal past.

The park itself covers approximately 24,000 square meters and preserves the castle's original moat system, which remains filled with water and creates a scenic perimeter around the grounds. The moat and surrounding stone walls are among the few authentic remnants of the original fortification. Cherry trees line the pathways throughout the park, making it one of Toyama's most popular hanami spots during spring, when roughly 540 cherry trees bloom simultaneously. The park also features traditional Japanese gardens with carefully maintained landscapes that reflect the aesthetic principles of the Edo period.

Visitors can explore the castle interior across three floors, where exhibits chronicle Toyama's transformation from a castle town to a modern city. The top floor observation deck provides panoramic views of the surrounding city and, on clear days, the Tateyama Mountain Range to the southeast. The park includes walking paths ideal for leisurely strolls, stone bridges crossing the moat, and benches positioned for viewing the castle's reflection in the water—a particularly photogenic scene at sunset or during cherry blossom season.

Toyama Castle Park is located approximately 10 minutes on foot from Toyama Station, making it highly accessible for travelers. The park can also be reached via the Toyama Light Rail or local buses that stop near the castle grounds. Admission to the park itself is free, though entry to the Sato Memorial Art Museum inside the castle requires a ticket priced at 210 yen for adults. The central location makes it easy to combine a visit with other downtown attractions, and the park remains open year-round as a public space for both tourists and local residents.
