Uradome Coast Ogurihama Beach, Iwami

4.3 (798)BeachNatural FeatureEstablishment

Uradome Coast Ogurihama Beach lies at the eastern tip of Tottori Prefecture in Japan's Chugoku region, forming part of the prestigious San'in Kaigan National Park. This 15-kilometer shoreline spanning from Kugami Point in the east to Mt. Shichi in the west is part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark, listed in the UNESCO Global Geopark Network. Uradome Coast was hailed as one of the 100 Best Coastlines in Japan, recognized for its geological significance as a natural museum where the forces of nature have carved dramatic coastal formations over millennia.

The coastline's distinctive landscape has been shaped by the raging waves and harsh weather of the Sea of Japan, creating a spectacular terrain of ragged scenery of bluffs, cliffs, caves, and rocks formed from erosion. This dramatic backdrop contrasts beautifully with the serene beach of white sand and green pines surrounded by a cape and crystal-clear seawater. The area features white sandy beaches and shallow coves with crystal-clear water and nutrient-rich waters that provide excellent conditions for marine life.

Visitors can experience the coast through multiple perspectives, starting with beachside exploration of the pristine white sand beaches perfect for swimming and sunbathing. To enjoy these sights from land, walk along the shoreline promenade for a pristine sea view. Marine activities include sea kayaking, snorkeling, and surfing, with equipment available for rent at local facilities.

The island boat tours offer a unique vantage point, with 40-minute rides in small boats that take you to the highlights of the Uradome Coast area, showing impressive stone fields from seaside with different views than beach access. Notable features include small islands with traditional torii gates reminiscent of Miyajima, creating photogenic scenes against the turquoise waters.

JR Iwami Station serves as the primary access point, located approximately three kilometers from the coast's main swimming beaches. From Tottori Station, travelers can take the Nikko Bus for 50 minutes and get off at the "Uradome Kaigan-guchi" stop, then it's a short walk from there. Alternatively, around 40 minutes by Nihon Kotsu Bus Iwami-Iwai Line from JR Tottori Station, disembarking at Shimameguri Yuransen Noriba-mae. Buses run direct from the station to the beach shore on an irregular schedule. By car, the coast is about 20 minutes from Tottori IC of Tottori Expressway. The beach area is free to access, though boat tour fees and equipment rentals apply separately.

What other travelers are saying about Uradome Coast Ogurihama Beach, Iwami

The sea is beautifully clear with excellent visibility. There wasn’t as much current as I had expected, so I was able to swim with peace of mind. There’s also plenty of parking, and the easy access is another big plus.

Very pretty. Water is crystal clean. People are so nice. A lot of walking people in the morning and super enjoyable.
Really quiet and beautiful place. Great for a morning stroll at the beach or run. The water is a bit cold in March, but you can walk or swim the the shrine and explore the small rock paths around the beach. Very worth it for a relaxing time away from the crowds.
About 45 minute walk from kamagaiso observation deck. No pedestrian walkway but fairly flat slope. Very nice scenery, no tourists here so off the beaten path
I love this beach! Kirei desu! The view is amazingly awesome! Many beautiful rocky spots. It is also a nice place to swim and hang out with your family friends even kids...
