Impressive castle that is not too busy. It's a bit of climb up to the ticket office, lots of steps! Very well preserved and lots of exhibits with English translation. There are 6 floors and the beautiful wooden steps get steeper as you go up, but the view from the top is excellent. Only 500 yen for the castle but get a combo ticket for 800 yen that gets you into the Castle Museum that is across the road. Beautifully presented exhibits and artefacts with English translation and a great little cafe on the second floor with a view of the castle. The staff were very helpful and friendly.
A beautiful attraction to learn about the histories of Kochi Castle. The path towards it is slightly rough, not as rough as the inside top section since the stairs are pretty high. Do watch your head however.
Theres a very small gift shop and you have to remove your shoes before entering. Please remember you need to pay 500 yen to enter. They do have a combo discount where you pay more but can go to the nearby Museum
It is heaven for Japanese history lovers
Not the most ornate and colourful castle in Japan. It is a petite size castle. The garden is also not as large compared to the one in Tokyo, Osaka or Kobe. Because of that, there is no real rush to cover more ground. One can explore the place leisurely if you desire.
For my visit in May 2026, it was raining and thus I need to undertake a functional visit mode.
There is ample parking next to the castle. The fee is ¥370 for car. Castle entrance fee is ¥500. One particular quirk to. It’s is that you need to park at the assigned lot given to you upon entry. A laminated sheet in English was handed over to me specifying the allocated parking lot and payment details.
English instruction and communication are available when interacting with Parking Attendants and Castle Staffs. They are friendly people.
Great views and authentic wooden stairs – surprisingly quiet!
We were quite surprised by how quiet and uncrowded it was, especially since it was the weekend! When we reached the top floor of the castle tower, we actually had the whole place to ourselves. The view from up there was absolutely fantastic.
Just a quick heads-up for future visitors: climbing up and down inside the castle involves some very steep wooden stairs.
Highly recommended if you are in Kōchi!
Brace your knees, there's steps every 100m or so and the stairs leading up to the vantage point of the city is steep. It's a sprawling complex, and really takes your breath away. Much of the original architecture is preserved, and there is a lot to see. The view at the top is simply stunning. The grounds are well maintained. One of the better castles in Japan I feel
