An ozashiki is a gathering with geisha, traditionally held at a tea house. The geisha perform classical dance to live shamisen music and play games with guests, so you take part rather than only watching from your seat.

You and a geisha take turns touching a small cover on an armrest in time with a song, using an open hand while the cover is there and a fist once it has been lifted. The geisha show you how to play before you start.

Is the matcha served as a tea ceremony?

No. A bowl of matcha and a Japanese sweet are served at your table as a relaxed break in the program rather than a formal tea ceremony.

Who are the three geisha?

Each session has dancers, known as tachikata, and a jikata, who plays the three-stringed shamisen and sings. The line-up changes from one session to the next.

There is no formal dress code, and casual to smart casual clothing is fine. Some guests arrive in a rented kimono, which is very welcome.
