Ikuchi Island is one of the most beautiful and culturally distinctive islands in the Seto Inland Sea, located in Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture along the famous Shimanami Kaido cycling and driving route that connects Onomichi on Honshu to Imabari on Shikoku. It is an island of extraordinary artistic heritage, celebrated citrus culture, and a landscape of peaceful Mediterranean-like beauty that has made it one of the most beloved destinations in the entire Setouchi region.

The island sits roughly at the midpoint of the Shimanami Kaido route, connected to neighboring islands by elegant suspension bridges that carry both road traffic and dedicated cycling and walking paths. The Shimanami Kaido is considered one of the finest cycling routes in the world, and Ikuchi Island represents its most culturally and scenically rewarding single stop.

The island is most famous as the birthplace and lifelong home of Hirayama Ikuo, one of the most celebrated and internationally recognized Japanese painters of the 20th century. Hirayama Ikuo was born on Ikuchi Island in 1930 and survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima as a schoolboy, an experience that profoundly shaped his artistic vision and his lifelong dedication to painting the ancient Silk Road civilizations and advocating for world peace through art.

The Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art (Hirayama Ikuo Bijutsukan) is the most important cultural institution on the island and one of the finest single-artist museums in western Japan. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of Hirayama's large-scale paintings depicting the landscapes, peoples, and monuments of the ancient Silk Road from Central Asia through Persia to the Mediterranean, executed in the traditional nihonga (Japanese painting) style with a grandeur and luminosity that is deeply impressive.

The museum building itself, designed with careful attention to the quality of natural light falling on the works, sits within a beautifully maintained garden that reflects the island landscape Hirayama loved throughout his life. The experience of viewing his monumental paintings within this quietly beautiful island setting is one of the most culturally moving and aesthetically complete museum experiences available anywhere along the Shimanami Kaido.

The Kosanji Temple complex is the most architecturally extraordinary and visually overwhelming attraction on Ikuchi Island, a privately constructed temple complex built by businessman Kouzo Hirayama (Kozo Kosanji) as a memorial to his mother between 1936 and 1987. The complex reproduces in remarkable detail some of the most celebrated architectural masterpieces in Japan, including replicas of structures from Nikko Tosho-gu, Byodo-in, and numerous other important historical buildings.

The scale and ambition of Kosanji Temple is genuinely astonishing, with elaborate Momoyama-style gates, multi-story pagodas, and decorative buildings covered in intricate gilded carvings and colorful paintings covering an extensive hillside site. The complex took over 50 years to complete and represents one of the most remarkable acts of architectural devotion in modern Japan, regardless of one's aesthetic judgments about its eclectic historical references.

Adjacent to the Kosanji complex is the Miraishin no Oka (Hill of Hope) sculpture park, featuring the extraordinary Marble Garden (Dairi-seki Teien) created by sculptor Kuetani Ikki. The white marble plaza and landscape sculptures covering the hillside above the temple create a dramatically contemporary and visually striking counterpoint to the ornate traditional architecture of the temple below.

The Ikuchi Island landscape is deeply shaped by its celebrated citrus culture, particularly the production of setoka, hamanasu, navel orange, and the island's most famous product, hassaku oranges. The terraced citrus orchards covering the island's hillsides above the coastal settlements create one of the most characteristic and beautiful agricultural landscapes of the Seto Inland Sea, particularly vibrant in winter when the orange fruit glows against the dark green foliage and the blue sea beyond.

Hassaku is a bitter citrus variety unique to the Setouchi region that has been cultivated on Ikuchi Island and the surrounding area since the Meiji era. The fruit's distinctive combination of bitterness and sweetness makes it one of the most characterful and regionally specific citrus products in Japan, and the hassaku products available in the island's shops and restaurants, including hassaku jam, hassaku juice, and hassaku-flavored confectionery, are among the most authentic and beloved local souvenirs of the Shimanami Kaido route.

The cycling culture of Ikuchi Island and the Shimanami Kaido route is central to the island's contemporary identity as a tourism destination. The dedicated cycling paths connecting the islands of the route pass through the heart of Ikuchi Island, and the combination of gentle gradients, extraordinary scenery, fresh sea air, and the remarkable cultural destinations of the island makes cycling through Ikuchi one of the most rewarding and memorable single-day cycling experiences available anywhere in Japan.

The island's small harbor communities of Setoda and surrounding settlements have a pleasantly traditional and unhurried island character, with local seafood restaurants, small guesthouses, and the everyday life of an Inland Sea fishing and farming community providing an authentic and deeply appealing backdrop to the island's more celebrated cultural attractions.

Ikuchi Island is accessible by road and cycling path via the Shimanami Kaido bridges from Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture or from Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. By car the island is approximately 50 minutes from Onomichi and 40 minutes from Imabari. Ferry services also connect the island to Onomichi and neighboring islands. From Osaka, Onomichi is reachable by JR Sanyo Shinkansen to Fukuyama followed by a local train connection in approximately 1 hour 30 minutes total.
