Imazu (今津), Shiga

Imazu is a small and quietly beautiful lakeside town located on the northwestern shore of Lake Biwa in Takashima City in Shiga Prefecture, facing the open waters of Japan's largest freshwater lake with the Hira Mountains rising dramatically behind the town to the east. The yoshi craft products of the Takashima area are recognized as traditional crafts of Shiga Prefecture and several producers in the region continue to maintain this ancient material culture tradition.

The Imazu Windmill (Imazu Fusha), a distinctive landmark visible along the lakefront road, reflects the agricultural and land management heritage of the Lake Biwa shore communities and has become one of the most recognizable and photographed features of the Imazu waterfront. The windmill's presence along the flat lakeside landscape creates a quietly distinctive and somewhat unexpected visual element in the Japanese lakeshore environment.

The broader Takashima City area surrounding Imazu contains several important and rewarding destinations that combine naturally with a visit to the lakeside town. The Metasequoia Namiki (Metasequoia Avenue), a spectacular tree-lined road stretching approximately 2.4 kilometers through the Makino area of Takashima, is lined on both sides with 500 metasequoia trees that create one of the most dramatically beautiful seasonal tree corridors in the Kansai region, particularly during autumn when the trees turn vivid shades of orange and gold.

The Makino Highland (Makino Kogen) area in the mountains above Imazu and Makino is one of the most beautiful and popular natural recreation areas in Shiga Prefecture, offering highland meadows, forest walks, and sweeping views over Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountain landscape. The highland is particularly celebrated for its maple trees during the autumn foliage season and for its wildflower meadows during summer, creating seasonal landscapes of considerable natural beauty accessible from the lakeside communities below.

The Tsuruga coastal area on the Wakasa Bay side of the mountain passes historically connected to Imazu via the Nishi Omi Kaido road is accessible through the mountain tunnels and passes of the Hira range, and the combination of Lake Biwa lakeside culture with Japan Sea coastal culture creates one of the most geographically and culturally diverse short regional itineraries available in the Kansai and Hokuriku border region.

Imazu is served by Imazu Station on the JR Kosei Line, connecting directly to Kyoto Station in approximately 1 hour and to Osaka via Kyoto in approximately 1 hour 30 minutes total. The direct rail connection to Kyoto makes Imazu and the broader Takashima northwestern Lake Biwa shore one of the most conveniently accessible lakeside destinations from the ancient capital, offering a genuinely rural and naturally beautiful lakeside experience within a comfortable and practical journey time from the major Kansai cities.
