Onsen de Yunotsu

Colloquial AreaPolitical
Última actualización 17 may 2026

Yunotsu Onsen is a historic hot spring town in Oda City, Shimane Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast. Discovered approximately 1,300 years ago during the Nara period, the springs rank among the San'in region's oldest documented onsen. Yunotsu served pilgrims and workers from Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site operating from the 16th to 20th centuries. The town functioned as a rest stop and therapeutic retreat for miners, establishing its reputation for healing waters.

Hot spring water emerges at 50-55°C containing sodium chloride and minerals beneficial for muscle pain, joint conditions, and skin health. Yunotsu preserves Edo and Meiji period architecture with wooden ryokan, stone streets, and historic bathhouses. Yakushiyu Public Bathhouse, reconstructed in Taisho-era style, features traditional tile work and wooden construction. The town holds designation as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

Visitors to Yunotsu Onsen can bathe in several public bathhouses including Yakushiyu and Motoyuyu, both offering access to the natural hot spring water in traditional settings with separate gender facilities. The compact town allows walking exploration of preserved streets, historic ryokan facades, and small shops selling local products.

Staying overnight at traditional ryokan provides the full onsen experience with kaiseki meals featuring local seafood from the nearby coast. The town's proximity to Iwami Ginzan, approximately 10 kilometers inland, makes it a natural base for exploring the silver mine heritage sites, mountain trails, and preserved mining villages. The waterfront location offers views across the Sea of Japan with coastal walking paths.

Yunotsu Onsen is accessible by train via the JR San'in Main Line to Yunotsu Station, with limited express services from Izumo (approximately 60 minutes) and Matsue (approximately 90 minutes). From the station, the onsen district is roughly 5 minutes on foot. Visitors from Hiroshima can reach Yunotsu via train connections through Gotsu Station, with total journey times around 2-3 hours. Buses connect Yunotsu Onsen to Iwami Ginzan and surrounding areas, though schedules are limited.
