Kunisaki Peninsula extends into the Seto Inland Sea in northeastern Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, formed around Mount Futago (721 meters) with ridges radiating outward in a wheel-like pattern. From the 8th century, the peninsula developed Rokugo Manzan, a syncretic religious culture combining Buddhism, Shinto, and mountain worship. Stone rakan (arhat) statues line forested paths. Sacred rocks, waterfalls, and cave shrines mark pilgrimage routes. The area received Japan Heritage designation in 2018.

The Kumano Magaibutsu carvings, standing approximately 8 meters tall, require climbing 100 stone steps through forest. Futago-ji Temple offers access to mountain worship sites and seasonal autumn foliage. Rural villages maintain traditional agricultural landscapes with stone walls and terraced rice fields. The peninsula's coastline features fishing ports, small beaches, and rocky headlands with views across the Seto Inland Sea. Kunisaki Peninsula is accessible by car from Oita Airport, located on the peninsula's eastern coast, making it a convenient base for exploration. Rental cars are recommended as public transportation between scattered temple sites is limited. From Oita city, the peninsula is approximately 60-90 minutes by car via coastal highways. Limited bus services connect major towns like Kunisaki City and Bungotakada, but reach few temple sites. The nearest train station is Usa Station on the JR Nippo Line, approximately 30 minutes from the peninsula's western edge by bus or car.
