The Befco Bakauke Observatory stands atop Bandai City in Niigata, Japan, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes from the 125-meter-high observation deck. The facility opened in 2000 as part of a multi-purpose complex that includes shopping, dining, and entertainment venues. The observatory is named after Befco, a local confectionery company famous for its Bakauke rice crackers, which has deep roots in Niigata's food culture.

Located in Japan's rice-producing heartland, the observatory provides sweeping vistas across Niigata City toward the Sea of Japan, the Echigo Mountains, and on clear days, Sado Island in the distance. The observation deck features 360-degree views through floor-to-ceiling windows, making it one of the best vantage points in the city. The facility particularly appeals to visitors interested in urban landscapes and coastal geography, as Niigata serves as a major port city connecting mainland Japan to the surrounding islands.

Visitors can access the observation deck to experience both daytime and evening views, with the city lights and port area creating atmospheric nighttime scenery. The building itself houses various attractions including restaurants where guests can sample regional Niigata cuisine, shopping areas featuring local products, and the Befco Bakauke Inari Museum on lower floors, which showcases the history of rice cracker production in the region. The observatory provides binoculars for closer views of landmarks and distant geographical features.

The observatory is located within Bandai City shopping complex in central Niigata, approximately 15 minutes by bus from JR Niigata Station. Visitors can take the Bandai City loop bus or walk about 20 minutes from the station. Admission to the observation deck costs ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for children, making it an affordable sightseeing option.

It’s a FREE to enter viewing deck located on the 31 floor. It’s a must visit if you’re in Niigata. The observatory offers 360° view of the city as well as the mountains in the backdrop and the Sea of Japan. There is also a small cafe selling ice cream and a few main dishes like Katsu-don and Carbonara the price isn’t expensive (Carbonara cost ¥1200) and considering the viewing deck is free, please do show them support.

Free to enter, but the elevator is a little slow. We parked at a lot down the street, but there's also a lot connected by bridge directly across from the building (prices reasonable). It wasn't too crowded in the early/mid morning, but I could see it really filling up. There's a souvenir shop and restaurant also crammed into a small space, and I'm sure they don't let rando tourists take photos on the north side when there are people eating. Nice views of the city, but go early!
We were the inly visitors at this view deck. You can view Niigata and its cities within the panoramic landscape
The Befco Bakauke Observatory is free to enter. From high above, you can gaze out over Niigata as the night gently unfolds before your eyes. The city lights flow like a river of stars, quietly reflecting a sense of softness and peace within. It’s a tender moment worth pausing for and quietly tucking away during your journey.
You can access the observation deck through the elevator in the hotel. It's free to access and open to everyone not just hotel guests. Sunset on a clear day begins around 645pm There are restrooms, a small cafe, a gift shop and a few benches
