Former Mouri Family Main Residence (Mouri Museum), Hofu

The Mouri Museum in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture occupies the former main residence of the Mouri clan, one of Japan's most powerful feudal families during the Edo period. The Mouri clan ruled the Choshu Domain for over 250 years and played a crucial role in the Meiji Restoration that transformed Japan from a feudal state into a modern nation in the late 19th century. The estate itself was constructed in 1916 as the family's private residence and exemplifies traditional Japanese aristocratic architecture, set within beautifully landscaped gardens that reflect the refined aesthetics of the samurai class.

The museum houses an exceptional collection of over 20,000 items including samurai armor, swords, historical documents, paintings, and tea ceremony implements that once belonged to the Mouri family. The collection provides direct insight into the political and cultural life of feudal Japan's ruling elite. The residential buildings themselves remain remarkably well-preserved, allowing visitors to experience authentic Japanese aristocratic living spaces with their tatami rooms, painted screens, and architectural details. The surrounding Mouri Garden spans approximately 25,000 square meters and features seasonal landscapes, walking paths, traditional bridges, and carefully cultivated trees that create distinct atmospheres throughout the year.

Visitors can explore both the museum's exhibition halls and the historic residence itself, with English signage available in key areas. The garden is particularly notable during cherry blossom season in spring and autumn foliage season, though its design ensures year-round visual interest. Photography is permitted in the gardens but restricted inside museum buildings. The site typically requires 60 to 90 minutes for a complete visit including both indoor and outdoor areas.

The museum is located approximately 2 kilometers from Hofu Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line, accessible by taxi in about 5 minutes or by bus. Regular buses depart from the station's north exit. Admission costs ¥700 for adults, with reduced rates for students and seniors. The museum is closed on Thursdays and during the New Year period. Free parking is available for visitors arriving by car.
