Miyashita Park originally opened in 1953 as a public urban park in Shibuya Ward, strategically positioned between Shibuya and Harajuku stations. In the 1960s, it became Tokyo's first rooftop park when the Shibuya River was converted into underground drainage and the park was elevated above a newly constructed parking lot. After closing in 2017 for redevelopment, the park reopened in July 2020 as a multidimensional complex that represents modern Tokyo's innovative approach to urban space maximization.

The reimagined facility addresses the critical need for green space in densely populated Japanese cities while integrating commercial and recreational functions. The complex stretches 330 meters alongside the Yamanote Line tracks and features 14,000 square meters of rooftop parkland. This vertical design creates an urban oasis that demonstrates Japanese principles of space efficiency, offering residents and visitors a rare retreat within one of Tokyo's busiest commercial districts.

Visitors can access the rooftop park with its expansive lawns, skateboard park, bouldering wall, and sand court for beach volleyball. The lower levels house Rayard Miyashita Park shopping complex with approximately 90 stores featuring domestic and international brands, from high-end fashion to street culture shops. The first floor includes Shibuya Yokocho, a 100-meter indoor alley with 19 eateries offering regional Japanese specialties. The complex also contains the 240-room Sequence Miyashita Park hotel on the upper floors.

Admission to the park is free. Individual sports facilities may require reservations or fees. The park is accessible via a one-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station to the south entrance, or three minutes from Tokyo Metro Shibuya Station B1 exit to the north block. The facility is also reachable via the Hanzomon, Fukutoshin, Tokyu Toyoko, Yamanote, and Keio Inokashira lines. The complex features 24 escalators and 7 elevators for barrier-free access between levels.

Traveler reviews

The park itself had a lot of locals enjoying the park while we were there as we had good weather. The view is quite nice. We went to one of the restaurants at the bottom of the park. The food was pretty cheap and tasty.

Loved going to this place, was such a fun an energetic vibe with the people around here. We got sucked into the pop up Daiwa store from its more casual appeal while being a fishing fanatic. Ground level offered many options for food and drinks. Lots of people having fun here 😆 🤣 😂

The ultimate rooftop hangout spot in Shibuya! MIYASHITA PARK is a fantastic multi-purpose complex that perfectly captures the modern energy of Tokyo. The rooftop park is the highlight—it’s a wide-open green space right above the busy streets, offering great views of the city and the passing trains. It’s a perfect mix of high-end shopping, trendy restaurants, and a relaxing park atmosphere. Whether you want to grab a coffee at Starbucks, go bouldering, or just sit on a bench and people-watch, this place has it all. A must-visit for a stylish afternoon in Shibuya!
