Originally constructed in the 14th century during the Kamakura period, the castle served as a crucial defensive fortress controlling maritime traffic through the Seto Inland Sea. The Hosokawa clan later expanded and fortified the structure during the 16th century before it was eventually abandoned following the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

The ruins represent an important example of yamashiro (mountain castle) architecture and demonstrate the strategic military planning of medieval Japan. The site offers exceptional panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea and surrounding islands, making it significant both historically and as a natural vantage point. Archaeological excavations have revealed foundation stones, defensive earthworks, and remnants of the original three-tiered structure.

Visitors can explore the remaining stone foundations, defensive walls, and reconstructed observation areas while following well-maintained hiking trails. The 30-minute climb from the base leads through terraced ruins to the main citadel area. Interpretive signs in Japanese and English explain the castle's layout and historical significance. Spring brings cherry blossoms that frame the ruins beautifully, while autumn offers clear visibility and comfortable hiking conditions. Summer visits provide lush greenery but can be humid, and winter offers the clearest distant views though temperatures are cooler. The site remains accessible year-round during daylight hours.

The nearest station is JR Hiketa Station on the Kotoku Line, located 2 kilometers from the castle base. Local buses run infrequently, making the 25-minute walk from the station the most reliable access method. Admission is free, and the site is open 24 hours daily. To be clear - there isn't a castle. It's the site a castle was on, with several spots with remains of the rock walls of the castle. But it's 5 stars for the fantastic walking/hiking trails leading to breathtaking views of the ocean. The trails also lead to the lighthouse (itself run-down, but again with a great view) and down to the rocky beach, to see Joro island - a small, uninhabitated island by the looks. If you visit Hiketa, this is a must. (There's not too much else to do).

Hiketa Castle was the site of the Battle of Hiketa, where Sengoku Hidehisa and Chosokabe Motochika fought. Even at an elevation of 82.3m, it's still quite a hike...😅 It takes at least 40 minutes to walk around Honmaru → Lighthouse → East Bailey → North Bailey. From Honmaru, you can enjoy beautiful views of Hiketa Port and the Seto Inland Sea! ✨ I went on a Friday, and there was no one there except me. The stamp is located at Sanshu Izutsu Yashiki, about a 3-minute drive from the castle parking lot.

Hiketa Castle, which ruled over the entire region, is located on a cliff on a peninsula. It is a sturdy castle with a panoramic view of the surrounding area, especially the Seto Inland Sea. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to walk from the trailhead to the remains of the main castle. The castle town at the foot of the mountain has also been preserved in its original form, and it is well worth a stroll. The path to the remains of the main castle feels like a light hike, so it is best to wear sturdy shoes.

A quiet memory of the Warring States period remains on a mountain overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Hiketa Castle ruins is a medieval mountain castle built on a castle mountain at an altitude of 82 meters, and the view from the top is exactly what a warlord would have seen in the Warring States period. If the weather is good, you can see all the way to Awaji Island. Walking along the still-remaining rough-faced stone walls and the remains of the castle enclosure, you will naturally feel like you are standing tall. There are information boards along the way that give a glimpse of the structure at the time, which is irresistible for history buffs. The path to the castle is well maintained, but it feels like you are climbing a mountain, so sneakers or trekking shoes are recommended. It takes about 20 minutes from the parking lot to the remains of the main enclosure. The reward for climbing is a spectacular view that only you can see here, where the wind, light, and the smell of the sea mix together. If you continue along the ridge, you will reach the small white-painted "Hiketahana Lighthouse." The lighthouse itself is small and a little disappointing, but the surrounding tranquility and the pleasant scent of plants make you feel as if time has stopped. We also recommend visiting the Hiketa Townscape Preservation District. The streets, where old merchant houses from the Edo to Meiji periods and the Sanshu Izutsu Residence remain, are alive with the history and life of Kagawa. It's not well known, but it's a "low-key but effective" place where you can experience the sea, history, and tranquility all at once. It's a perfect spot for people who love mountain castles, lighthouses, and quiet time.

Visited on a Saturday afternoon in early June 2025. We parked in the parking lot and climbed with my uncle. It's a low-altitude mountain castle and has been somewhat maintained, but it's tough to climb in sandals. It was nice to see the remains of a splendid stone wall that's over 400 years old. Overall, there are castles with more difficult climbs and castle ruins that are worth seeing, but this one has a parking lot and is easy to climb, so it's worth visiting if you have the time. It was cloudy on the day, but the view wasn't bad.
