Houreinoyu

Houreinoyu, also known as Hourei-no-yu or Hourei Inn, is a hot spring facility nestled at the base of Mount Waita in the Waita Onsen Village area of Oguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. Located at an elevation of approximately 760 meters in Kyushu's interior, the site forms part of a collection of six small onsen resorts in the Waita hot spring area, a region characterized by dramatic geothermal activity with steam vents and bubbling hot springs visible throughout the landscape.

The facility is renowned for its distinctive milky-blue hot spring water, which flows directly from natural underground sources without recycling or reheating. This 100% natural sodium-chloride hot spring contains high levels of moisturizing minerals and silicic acid, traditionally believed to improve skin conditions, aid circulation, and help with cuts, burns, and chronic skin ailments. The water temperature reaches approximately 98.7°C at its source, creating an intensely hot bathing experience that can be tempered with cold water taps provided in each bath.

Visitors can choose from 17 private family baths divided into three categories: five outdoor hinoki (cypress) baths at ¥2,000 per hour, six outdoor rock baths with roofs at ¥1,500 per hour, and six indoor rock baths at ¥1,000 per hour. The outdoor baths offer panoramic views of Mount Waita and the surrounding volcanic plateau. The facility also operates gender-segregated public open-air baths at ¥600 per person. The private baths operate on a coin-operated first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved in advance, with the outdoor hinoki and public baths open from 8 AM to 7 PM, while rock baths remain accessible 24 hours.

Beyond bathing, Houreinoyu offers jigoku-mushi (hell-steamed) cuisine, a local specialty where visitors use natural hot spring steam to cook their own ingredients. This traditional cooking method requires no oil and preserves the natural flavors of vegetables, meats, and eggs. Guests can bring their own food or purchase local produce including Oguni vegetables, chicken, and sweet potatoes from the facility's shop. The inn also provides overnight accommodation with various room types, with rates ranging from ¥4,150 to ¥6,150 per person per night (meals not included). The facility accepts cash payment only.

Reaching Houreinoyu requires advance planning as public transport is limited. By car, the drive takes approximately 2 hours from Fukuoka Airport via the Kyushu Expressway and National Route 387, or 1.5 hours from Kumamoto Airport via National Route 57 and 212. For those using public transportation, take the Kyushu Sanko Bus from either Fukuoka's Nishitetsu Tenjin Terminal (approximately 3 hours 10 minutes) or Kumamoto Station (approximately 3 hours 5 minutes) to Kurokawa Onsen, then arrange a taxi for the final 20-minute journey. The facility offers free pickup service from Oguni Yu Station or nearby train stations for overnight guests who call ahead.
