Minato Mirai 21

Sublocality Level 2SublocalityPolitical

Minato Mirai 21 is Yokohama's futuristic waterfront district, developed on 176 hectares of reclaimed land and former shipyard sites. The area's name translates to "Harbor of the Future for the 21st Century," reflecting its vision as a model urban development project that began in the 1980s. The district transformed what was once the location of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' shipyard into a thriving business, residential, and entertainment hub that opened to the public in 1989.

The district serves as a symbol of modern Japan's technological advancement and urban planning innovation. Its skyline is dominated by the Landmark Tower, which stood as Japan's tallest building from its completion in 1993 until 2014, reaching 296 meters with 70 floors. The building features an observation deck on the 69th floor at 273 meters high, offering panoramic views across Yokohama, Tokyo Bay, and on clear days, Mount Fuji. The district also integrates green spaces and waterfront promenades that blend contemporary architecture with natural elements.

Visitors can explore multiple attractions within walking distance. The Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel, standing 112.5 meters tall, provides views over the bay and was the world's tallest Ferris wheel when it opened in 1989. The Cupnoodles Museum offers interactive exhibits on instant ramen history, while the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, dating from 1911, houses shops and restaurants in preserved historical structures. The district features numerous shopping complexes including Queen's Square Yokohama and Landmark Plaza, alongside the Pacifico Yokohama convention center.

The district is easily accessible via the Minatomirai Line, with Minato Mirai Station providing direct access to central locations. JR Sakuragicho Station on the Keihin-Tohoku and Negishi Lines sits at the district's edge, connected by a pedestrian bridge. From Tokyo, visitors can reach the area in approximately 35-40 minutes via train. Most outdoor areas and promenades are free to access, while individual attractions set their own admission fees—the Landmark Tower observation deck costs ¥1,000 for adults, and the Cupnoodles Museum charges ¥500.
