Muramatsu Park

4.1 (757)ParkTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Muramatsu Park in Gosen City, Niigata Prefecture, was established in 1906 to commemorate the Russo-Japanese War. Since its founding, the park has earned recognition as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Destinations, positioning it among the prefecture's three premier cherry blossom sites alongside Takada Castle Park and the Ozoku Canal area.

The park's primary attraction is its collection of approximately 3,000 cherry blossom trees that transform the grounds into a sea of pink and white during spring. The annual Cherry Blossom Festival, held throughout April, draws families and return visitors with its festive atmosphere featuring food stalls offering takoyaki, pan-fried soba, and other traditional festival foods alongside game stations. Beyond sakura season, the park offers year-round botanical interest with azaleas, peonies, and hydrangeas blooming in late spring, while autumn brings vibrant foliage displays.

Visitors can explore several features within the grounds, including Atago Shrine and Okiku-inari Shrine, multiple koi-filled ponds, and an observation deck providing panoramic views across Gosen City and, on clear days, extending to Niigata City. Families appreciate the playground equipment and open spaces suitable for picnicking beneath the cherry trees.

Admission to Muramatsu Park is free, though parking incurs a ¥500 fee during cherry blossom season (free at other times). The park accommodates up to 300 vehicles on-site. By rail, take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Niigata Station, transfer to the JR Ban'etsu West Line to Gosen Station, then board a bus for approximately 15-30 minutes to reach either the Muramatsu Park Front or Gakkoucho 2-chome stops. By car, the park is 25 minutes from the Yasuda Interchange on the Ban-Etsu Expressway or 50 minutes from the Tsubame-Sanjo Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cherry blossom season runs from early to mid-April, when the park's 3,000 sakura trees bloom. The Cherry Blossom Festival operates throughout April with food stalls and evening illuminations. Azaleas, peonies, and hydrangeas appear in late spring, while autumn brings foliage displays. The park is open year-round.

Entry to Muramatsu Park is free. However, parking fees apply seasonally. During cherry blossom season in April, parking costs ¥500. Outside of peak sakura viewing periods, parking is free. The park has space for up to 300 vehicles in its on-site parking area. There are no fees for walking the grounds, visiting the shrines, or accessing any of the park's natural features and facilities.

The park offers multiple attractions beyond its famous cherry blossoms. Visitors can explore two shrines on the grounds—Atago Shrine and Okiku-inari Shrine—along with several koi-filled ponds. An observation deck provides panoramic views over Gosen City and, on clear days, extends to Niigata City. The park features traditional Japanese garden elements including stone paths, bamboo groves, and walking trails. Families will find playground equipment for children, and the open spaces are ideal for picnicking, especially during festival periods when food and game stalls add to the atmosphere.

From Niigata Station, take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Gosen Station, then the Gosen City Fureai Bus for 15 minutes to Gakkoucho 2-chome stop. By car, the park is 25 minutes from Yasuda Interchange or 50 minutes from Tsubame-Sanjo Interchange. Taxis from Gosen Station take approximately 10 minutes.
