NANAKA Flower Garden is a botanical attraction located in Biei, Hokkaido, Japan, situated on gently rolling hills that offer panoramic views of the Tokachi mountain range. The garden was established in 2008 by local farmers who transformed agricultural land into a floral showcase, creating a destination that has become integral to Biei's reputation as one of Hokkaido's premier flower-viewing regions.

The garden spans approximately 15 hectares and features seasonal displays of flowers that bloom from late April through October. The cultivation focuses primarily on lavender, salvia, sunflowers, and cosmos, with different sections reaching peak bloom at varying times throughout the season. The elevation and microclimate of the location create ideal growing conditions for these species, contributing to the vibrant color displays that attract photographers and nature enthusiasts from across Japan and internationally.

Visitors can explore the grounds via walking paths that wind through the flower fields, with several observation decks positioned to maximize views of both the floral arrangements and the surrounding landscape. The garden's design incorporates the natural topography, allowing guests to experience the flowers from multiple elevations. A small shop on-site offers locally produced goods, including lavender products and Biei-grown agricultural items. The facility includes rest areas where visitors can view the gardens while taking breaks.

Access to NANAKA Flower Garden is most practical by car, located approximately 25 kilometers from Asahikawa Airport and 4 kilometers northwest of central Biei town. No direct public transportation serves the garden, though visitors can reach Biei Station via the JR Furano Line and then arrange taxi service or rent bicycles for the journey. The garden offers free parking for approximately 100 vehicles. Admission fees typically range from 500 to 700 yen for adults, with reduced rates for children, though prices may vary by season.

Traveler reviews

i went last summer in mid july for 海の日 weekend when the other farms were all very crowded - nanaka was quiet, beautiful, and smelled wonderful. the owners are exceptionally lovely and explained the different types of lavender, and kind enough to give us a ride to a recommended ramen spot nearby. the lavender bunches i picked dried nicely in my room for the next month. highly recommend coming here :)

Stopped by at the end of July to see some lavender when we were in Hokkaido. Unfortunately we discovered the blooming season was over, but it didn’t matter one bit. The lavender was still lovely as the couple who owns the fields. Great people and a recommended spot if you want to check out lavender without the large crowds and a more private experience where you can pick pesticide-free lavender to bring home.

I had the pleasure of visiting this lavender farm during my recent vacation in Hokkaido, and it was an enchanting experience. With great view on beauty of Mt. Tokachi, this lavender field offered a picturesque setting that left a lasting impression on me and my family. Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the meticulous upkeep of the lavender field. The farm's commitment to maintaining the lavenders' health and beauty was evident, making for a visually stunning display. The owner of the farm was an absolute delight. His warm and welcoming nature made us feel right at home. His genuine passion for lavender and dedication to creating a memorable experience for visitors truly shone through. As a family, we thoroughly enjoyed our time at this lavender farm. My 5-year-old daughter was particularly captivated by the fragrant blooms and the opportunity to interact with the lavender plants. The farm provided the unique opportunity for visitors to harvest lavender by hand, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience. It was a joyous occasion that brought us closer to nature and created lasting memories. For those seeking a hands-on lavender harvesting experience, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this farm, which offers a serene escape that will leave you refreshed and inspired.

Unlike at the other lavender farms in the area at Nanaka's you can also pick the lavender for yourself (for a very small fee). The plants are grown without the use of any chemicals which helps to preserve their natural smell. The farm is run by the sweetest couple who can also fluently speak English in case you have any questions regarding lavender.

Lovely family who own and run the lavender farm. Well worth a visit. Great place to escape the large tourist crowds at the other big flower farms. You can also get amazing views over the fields to the town below.

Frequently Asked Questions

The optimal visiting period depends on which flowers you wish to see. Lavender typically reaches peak bloom in mid-July, while sunflowers are at their best in late July to early August. Salvia displays are most vibrant from July through September, and cosmos flowers bloom from late August through September. The garden operates from late April through October, with the most diverse floral displays occurring between June and September when multiple species bloom simultaneously.

Without a car, visitors should take the JR Furano Line to Biei Station. From there, taxis are available for the approximately 4-kilometer journey to the garden, which takes around 10 minutes and costs roughly 1,500 to 2,000 yen. Alternatively, bicycle rentals are available near Biei Station, offering a scenic 20 to 30-minute ride through the countryside. However, note that the route includes some hills. During peak season, some local tour operators offer shuttle services or guided tours that include NANAKA Flower Garden as part of a Biei area itinerary.

NANAKA Flower Garden has a small shop that sells local products, light refreshments, and beverages. There are designated rest areas with seating where visitors can relax while enjoying views of the flower fields. However, full restaurant facilities are not available on-site, so visitors planning extended stays may want to bring their own food for picnicking in designated areas or plan to dine in Biei town before or after their visit.

The garden features walking paths throughout the flower fields, but the terrain includes slopes and uneven surfaces due to the natural hillside location. While the main paths are generally accessible, some steeper sections and observation points may be challenging for visitors with limited mobility or those using wheelchairs. Elderly visitors in good health can explore most areas at a comfortable pace, though walking assistance or comfortable footwear is recommended. It's advisable to contact the garden directly regarding specific accessibility needs before visiting.

Photography for personal use is welcomed and encouraged throughout NANAKA Flower Garden, making it a popular destination for both amateur and professional photographers. Tripods are generally permitted. However, visitors should remain on designated paths to protect the flower beds and avoid damaging plants. Commercial photography or filming typically requires advance permission from garden management. Drone usage is usually restricted and requires prior authorization. The garden's elevated position and mountain backdrop provide excellent opportunities for landscape photography throughout the day.
