Ogawa Town Washi Experience Learning Center, Saitama

The Ogawa Town Washi Experience Learning Center is housed in a historical building constructed in 1936 for the study of washi paper, serving as both a preservation facility and active learning space for traditional Japanese papermaking. Ogawa Town is known as a production center of washi paper with a history of about 1,300 years, establishing it as one of Japan's most important centers for this ancient craft in the Kanto region.

The center's significance extends beyond local heritage. Washi craftsmanship is practiced in three communities in Japan: Misumi-cho in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture, Mino City in Gifu Prefecture and Ogawa Town/Higashi-chichibu Village in Saitama Prefecture. Hosokawashi, which is made using only domestic kouzo paper and traditional methods, is registered as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, receiving this designation in 2014. The paper is made from fibers of the paper mulberry plant, soaked in clear river water, thickened, and filtered through bamboo screens using techniques that have remained unchanged for centuries.

The center offers papermaking experiences for visitors with advance reservations, including one-day and four-day courses to learn authentic washi making, as well as an introductory course that tourists can easily experience. The one-day course costs ¥5,000 and includes a classroom lecture explaining materials, making five sheets of plain mulberry paper, papermaking practice, and iron plate drying, with completed paper available to take home the same day. Participants work directly with kozo plant fibers, the essential material for washi production, and learn the traditional techniques that have earned the craft international recognition.

Ogawamachi Station is easily accessible by one direct train from Ikebukuro Station in central Tokyo on the Tobu Tojo Line, taking 75 minutes and costing 830 yen. The center is located approximately a 12-minute walk from the station, making it convenient for day trips from Tokyo. Many of the town's attractions can be visited on foot once visitors arrive in the area.
