Otaru Canal is a charming and historic canal located in the port city of Otaru. This picturesque canal, surrounded by old warehouses and cobblestone paths, offers a glimpse into the city's rich trading past. In the early 20th century, the canal was a bustling hub where goods were transported to and from warehouses.

Today, Otaru Canal has transformed into a popular tourist destination, celebrated for its scenic beauty and nostalgic atmosphere. The warehouses have been converted into museums, shops, and restaurants, providing visitors with a range of activities and dining options. A stroll along the canal, especially in the evening, is a delightful experience, as the path is illuminated by gas lamps, creating a romantic and somewhat nostalgic ambiance.

Visitors can also enjoy boat rides on the canal, offering a unique perspective of the surrounding architecture and a chance to experience the tranquility of the waterway. In winter, the canal becomes even more enchanting when it's covered in snow, and during the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival, the area is adorned with snow lanterns and small lights, creating a magical winter wonderland.

What other travelers are saying about Otaru Canal

Best place to be during early winter or autumn. Not during peak of winter season. Difficult to walk and navigate with heavy snowfall but overall a very nice place to spend a day or two. Can take the JR East trains here from Sapporo.

Otaru canal is a picturesque place for a stroll and take some nice photos. However, it can get very crowded with tourists and you have be to wait your turn to take photos at the nicer spots. We were there in January and the streets can get a little slippery. In general Otaru is a fabulous place to visit. We had the best (and most value for money) fried chicken in all the 8 cities and towns that we visited - Takeda's Fried Chicken.

Walking around the Otaru Canal and the nearby shopping street was such a wonderful experience! I visited in October, during the autumn season, when the weather was cool and perfectly comfortable for strolling. I started my walk in the late morning, just taking my time to explore the area and enjoy the beautiful scenery. By afternoon, I stopped for lunch at a local restaurant nearby. The food was incredibly delicious — a bit pricier than usual, but totally worth it for the flavor and generous portions. As evening approached, the canal area became even more magical. The lights reflecting on the water created such a romantic and cozy atmosphere. Don’t miss the nearby walking street either — it’s beautiful both in the afternoon and at night, with lovely decorations and warm lights. If you ever visit Otaru, this is definitely a place you must see at least once! 🌸✨

I visited Otaru for a short morning trip. The canal area is peaceful and beautiful even on a cloudy winter day. The historic warehouses, calm water, and quiet streets feel very different from Sapporo. I also walked along the old railway track area, which is a nice spot. Transportation (JR Sapporo → Otaru) Take the Rapid Airport / Rapid Otaru train (no extra fee required) Left-side seats offer a better direct ocean view without turning your head, but the right side is closer to the sea The ride is about 32–35 minutes.

Lovely, leisurely scenic walk along the Otaru Canal — absolutely beautiful both day and night. The weather was perfect and the atmosphere calm, with mountains in the backdrop adding to the charm. The old warehouses and potted flowers lining the canal make it even more picturesque. We were lucky to visit during the salmon migration and even spotted a few jumping in the nearby river (and one or two in the canal!). A refreshing and memorable stop — a must-visit when in Otaru.
