Sapporo Bankei Ski Area is a compact urban ski resort located just 20 minutes from central Sapporo in Hokkaido, Japan. Established in 1970, it was developed to provide accessible winter sports facilities for the rapidly growing city and has since become one of the most convenient ski destinations for both locals and visitors to Sapporo. The resort sits on the slopes of Mount Bankei at an elevation ranging from 340 to 600 meters, offering a vertical drop of 260 meters across its runs.

The ski area holds particular significance as Sapporo's closest major ski facility, making it an ideal introduction to Hokkaido's renowned powder snow without the need for extensive travel. Unlike remote mountain resorts, Bankei serves as an urban skiing experience where visitors can enjoy winter sports in the morning and explore Sapporo's city attractions in the afternoon. The resort features 17 courses catering to various skill levels, with approximately 30% beginner slopes, 40% intermediate, and 30% advanced terrain.

Visitors can expect well-maintained facilities including rental equipment shops, ski schools with English-speaking instructors available upon request, and a lodge with dining options serving both Japanese and Western cuisine. The resort is particularly popular with families due to its gentle beginner slopes and dedicated snow play areas. Advanced skiers appreciate the challenging mogul runs and tree skiing opportunities on the upper mountain.

Access from Sapporo is straightforward via the Jotetsu Bus, which runs directly from Maruyama Bus Terminal to the ski area in approximately 30 minutes. The bus service operates frequently during the winter season with departures every 30 to 60 minutes. Visitors can also take a taxi from central Sapporo for around ¥3,000 to ¥4,000. A full-day lift ticket costs approximately ¥4,900 for adults and ¥3,500 for children, with discounted rates available for half-day and night skiing sessions.

Traveler reviews

It’s pretty sweet I went out and snowboarded with the fellas. Snow board rental was 15500¥ and you gotta buy a ski lift pass. I probably would’ve had more fun skiing bc that’s what I’m use to. I kinda suck at snowboarding and fell a lot. And if you plan to go down the hill really fast wear that brain bucket. If I didn’t I definitely would have cracked my skull open. But it’s a pretty area and I would recommend going.

If you’re learning to ski — this is the place. The resort was comfortably busy in February. Lively enough to feel exciting, yet never overwhelming. The slopes are wide, gentle, and incredibly beginner-friendly, which makes those first turns feel less intimidating and a lot more fun. The atmosphere? Relaxed. Encouraging. Supportive. Staff members are genuinely friendly and patient — you never feel rushed or judged, even if you’re clipping into your skis for the fifth time. It’s the kind of environment that makes you want to try again after every small tumble. And the value? Excellent. February snow conditions were soft and forgiving — ideal for beginners. Add in the scenic mountain backdrop and crisp winter air, and even practice runs feel special.

We had great time! It was our first time and our instructor was Ms. Wakku and Ms. Yumi. They were really good and patient and fun while teaching. In 1.5 hrs, we learned how to control ski speed. We will definitely come back for more practice. 😆

The staff are kind to us who were first timers. There are no classes available till Dec 26. We watched few videos before skiing because there were no classes. We bought full set with wear for 14500 for 4 hours. Beginners don’t need to go on ski lift. There is food and drinks available for normal price. We had fun skiing at Bankai.
